It will take an amazing run at the end to catch the white sox. At least Miggy's triple crown attempt is keeping things interesting. Phone Post

Tigers get another win against the A's, 6-2. Valverde, of course, gives up some runs to spoil the shutout and make it interesting.

^A big homestand should help, but we'll see.

Detroit commits 3 errors in the nightcap and loses again to Minnesota, 2-1 in 10 innings. 10 games left, and the Tigers sit 1 game back of Chicago for the division.

Fister set the AL record with 9 straight strikeouts today. Tigers will be a force in the playoffs with Verlander, Scherzer, and Fister as a starting rotation. Phone Post

Tigers beat the Twins, 2-1. Coupled with a Chicago loss, the Tigers are up by 3 games with 3 to play. Any win or Sox loss clinches the division.

Regular season now over, final record 88-74 and win the AL Central by 3 games! 30-24 in the last 3rd of the season. A slow start nearly doomed the season but going 63-45 in the last 2/3 of the season gets the division win.

Let's review the bats (Avg. / HR / RBI - notes):

C - Alex Avila: .243 / 9 / 48 – Definitely did not live up to the hype.
1B - Prince Fielder: .313 / 30 / 108 – Good season, but not as good as the price they paid
2B – Omar Infante: .257 / 4 / 20 – Coupled with the bad defense, not a good pick-up
3B - Miguel Cabrera: .330 / 44 / 139 – Triple Crown and likely MVP. Yeah, he’s good
SS - Jhonny Peralta: .239 / 13 / 63 – Another Tiger who took a step back from 2011
LF - Delmon Young: .267 / 18 / 74 – 30 RBI in the last 3rd of the season is good. Solid enough bat
CF - Austin Jackson: .300 / 16 / 66 – Cooled off toward the end, hopefully he heats up for the playoffs
RF - Brennan Boesch: .240 / 12 / 54 – Lost his starting job, another big disappointment in the lineup
DH – See Delmon Young.
Bench/Other notables – Andy Dirks (.322 / 8 / 35 – starts LF mostly), Avisail Garcia (.319 in 47 AB – good in RF), Quentin Berry (.258 / 20 SB – bat cooled off but good speed), Gerald Laird (.282 – solid), Ramon Santiago (.206 – yikes), Danny Worth (.216 – ditto), Ryan Raburn (.171 – one of Leyland’s guys, regrettably), Don Kelly (.186 – ditto)

Rotation (W-L / ERA - notes)

Justin Verlander: 17-8 / 2.64 – Good season with no run support and bullpen failures
Doug Fister: 10-10 / 3.45 – Up and down season, need him to produce in playoffs
Max Scherzer: 16-7 / 3.74 – ERA dropped almost a full run in the last 54 games, amazing season
Rick Porcello: 10-12 / 4.59 – Sigh
Anibal Sanchez: 4-6 / 3.74 – Decent ERA but that’s it.
Drew Smyly: 4-3 / 3.99 – Ok when in rotation, moved to bullpen/spot starts

Middle Relief (ERA / IP – notes)

Joaquin Benoit: 3.68 / 71.0 – Not as good lately, blew 4 saves
Octavio Dotel: 3.57 / 58.0 – Ok, not great
Phil Coke: 4.00 / 54.0 – Meh
Brayan Villarreal: 2.63 / 54.2 – ERA doubled in last 20 IP
Duane Below: 3.88 / 46.1 – Another meh
Darin Downs: 3.48 / 20.2 – Any relief arms who didn’t have their ERA skyrocket?
Luis Marte: 2.82 / 22.1 – Good
Al Alburquerque: 0.68 / 13.1 – Good to have him back!
Luke Putkonen: 3.94 / 16 – An arm to use when everyone else is tired

Closer (SV/OP / ERA – notes)

Jose Valverde: 35/40 / 3.78 – Should never, ever, ever, ever be used in non-save situations

Hard to call a season in which you make the playoffs a disappointment, but inconsistency nearly doomed the club to watching the postseason instead of playing in it. Miggy’s Triple Crown, A-Jax’s solid season, and good starting pitching by Verlander and Scherzer were the highlights, along with the emergence of Andy Dirks and Prince Fielder’s solid transition to the AL.
On to the postseason now, will host Oakland for the first 2 games of the divisional round. They went 4-3 vs. the A’s in the regular season.
More to come!
