Just got the results of my MRI back and my knee has a tear (degree unknown) along with degeneation of the meniscus as well. I am going to meet with an Ortho next week to discuss my options.

What are some things I should ask in regard to training again and short term vs long term fix?

Man that sucks. Just curious how did you tear it? Did you tear during training or doing something else?

the answer to your question really depends on if you have to have surgery or not. if the tear is in the outer zone of the meniscus (where blood flow is) it might heal on its own if tear is not major. Ask your Dr. what time frame he thinks is sufficient for healing(no training during this time). if the tear is on the inside (inner knee)of the meniscus where blood does not flow, you might have to have arthroscopic surgery. My suggestion is choose your DR. carefully, if you can get a Ortho. knee specialist in a sports medicine group that would be good. Also make absolutely sure you need surgery, the meniscus cartilage is a finite resource and it does not grow back, if the knee is scoped some will be taken out. Research this stuff on your own, theres a lot of info. on web-youtube. Have a written list of questions ready for your DR. b/c you got about a 20 min. window (if that) to talk to him and you dont want to forget important questions. theres a similar post about this on the atama bjj forum by Malachy Friedman titled 'guys with meniscus surgery'.

From the initial MRI it shows a tear on the horn of the meniscus along with degeneration. I am meeting with a local sports orthopedic here in town.

My doc told me the tear is on the right inside of my left knee if that makes any sense. The pain and swelling is on the outer left of my left knee which made me surprised on where the tear is.

It was injured while running from what i can see. Nothing out of the norm just long distance 10+ mile training. I may have had wear from years of contact sports and maybe Jiu Jitsu. The crazy thing is they its not hurting any other time other than while running or sprints on the knee. Phone Post
