I've been thinking about the military for quite a while. I'm 24yrs old and finishing a degree would take about 2 years from where I'm at now. I honestly believe if I dont serve in the military ill deeply regret it later in life but I'm at a crossroads and can't seem to get a clear head about it.
I want to become an officer but I know there's an age cutoff that would be tough to meet if I enlisted at this point and then tried to finish school and go to OCS later. Ultimately I'd like to be a Surface Warfare Officer in the Navy but I really need some advice. Phone Post

generally the age cutoffs are about 32 or so...

you'll prolly wanna talk to a recruiter in your area, though.

I deployed with a few LTs. that were over 37.  One was a butter bar and now is the commander (CPT) of a company ready for another deployment.

You'll see some older L.T's, but they are usually prior enlisted and did some kind of green to gold, AMEDD progrom, or earned a bachelor degree while enlisted and got their commission.

I'm meeting with a National Guard recruiter about doing OCS tomorrow. I'm 25 years old and will be graduating from Law School on May 7. I am kind of in the same boat but I figured I'd do something "fun" like Basic after I take the bar exam (I have six months between taking the bar and getting the results).

I've thought about doing this. I served as a Marine, got out went to college and got a pretty cushy job. I miss going out to field and stuff, Im tempted to talk to a NG recruiter about possibility of going in as an Armor or Arty Officer. I'm 36yrs old and former enlisted grunt.

That's just how long I've had this screen name. I started lurking just before the switch to mma.tv. I live a life of few regrets but I do regret not signing up sooner and having the coveted "1/1/01."

Wow look at you, you've been reading posts about Horsecock, MIIJ, and getting in fights at Starbucks and you still ended up fine. Good on you! :)

Experience talking here and I would do it all over again. I commissioned after my bachelors and before I started medical school. The NG has taken EXCEPTIONAL care of me throughout my training both in medicine and the military. I am currently an O3 and preparing to re-up. I recently graduated medical school, as well as competed in my first amateur MMA bout, all with great support from my NCO. Serving your country isn't a "what if" that you want to have when you're older... Phone Post

Like I said. Te NG is horrible. I tried to talk a former soldier out of doing it. He just wanted to feel apart of a unit again and still see his fam. He argued that he was going to a great unit. Now he is pissed because he sees that it is shit. No care for authority. We even had an e6 that couldn't read or write. The good ole boys sent a spec to read and write for him at a NG PLDC school so he could retire as a 6. They are shit. Plain and simple. Phone Post

The one near my area could be one of the few good ones. Majority of the officers were prior service, many were electrical or software engineers from one of the big defense companies, and cross-fitters. One of the guys was asking me if I was interested in commissioning after cross fit class. I gave it some thought, but I cant afford the pay cut of a deployment nor time away from the kids. I was single I would.

You don't exactly have a strong grasp of the language yourself there big man. Just sayin'... You might think before calling out an entire group of the military. Each state is VERY different in how they handle their units, drill, and deployments. Try to not speak as though you have experience with every aspect of the guard because I promise that you do not. If you're prior, then I respect that, but I also expect better of a prior than to run off at the mouth than that... Phone Post

Yes. I'm no expert at typing on my iPhone. Good call there, genius. I call it as I see it. I've dealt with various guard units from different states that were terrible. Do I hav a hatred for them? Yes. It could be the facts that I mentioned above and the fact that the unit we relieved in Iraq decided not to do patrols for 6 months because they had been hit by IEDs and said fuck it. So our guys had to go out and clear routes. I'm sure our 80 losses were ok with them.

And to the OP. I do hope if you go through with this that your unit is a good one. And I so wish you the best in all you do. Phone Post
