I cant see Alvarez fighting the same fight that Melendez did so i'm kind of expecting him to get sucked into a clinch and dragged to the ground. If it hits the ground then of course I go with Aoki. If Alvarez manages to keep it standing then I envision a knockout.

Aoki has been training MT at Evolve MMA, which is known for their MT

Gonna be a closer fight on the feet than most ppl think Phone Post

Swamuel McSwamuelson - no it won't^

Aoki doesn't have the power or speed that Chandler possesses, Aoki needs to get it to the ground.
Point is he's not a one-trick pony anymore. Maybe a 1.75 now.

He's not gonna get dominated on the feet anymore like what Gil did to him. His best chance of winning is still by sub, but he can now use MT and wrestling (Heath Sims is his wrestling coach) to survive on the feet to get it on the ground. Phone Post

Nice. I was in Saitama for their 2008 Dynamite fight. I thought it was going to be ridiculous. I like both guys, and hope it doesn't end so quickly this time. Phone Post

Gilbert laid the blue print on how to beat Aoki. The question is can Eddie follow it?

Eddie Alvarez will beat Aoki this time around. Although I
do not think Alvarez will play it as safe as Gilbert did.
Eddie just doesn't have that much discipline in his style
to fight Aoki like that & IMO he's not as good a grappler
nor is he as physically strong as Melendez.

So IMO Alvarez while very good and smart/tactical just does
not posess the grappling ability to play the ground to just
engage and dissingage Aoki on the canvas like Gilbert did.

I think Aoki always has a chance. Aoki is the greatest
submission fighter I have ever seen in MMA. If you fuck
with him or make 1 tiny mistake he will submit you. IMO if
Eddie plays with him on the ground or even allows Aoki to
flop for a leg he could be done. If Aoki misses a shot he's
best suited to NOT follow his opponent down just wave him
up and punch him in the mouth.

I just don't think he has the grappling game to play around
with Shinya like Gil. That said I think he can survive long
enough to stand up but just avoiding the ground all
together is his best bet 4 victory.

This talk of Aoki having some improved striking via Evolve
are quite hysterical. Even if Aoki has improved in "stand
up" department he has about as much a chance standing with
Alvarez as he did standing with Nagashima :)

If shinya isn't scared to get KO'd and doesn't fight
stricty like a single disciplined grappler and he can get
in Eddies face long enough to get the takedown, trip or
throw he needs then so be it.

Either way win or lose for either fighter...I can't wait.
Prediction: Alvarez via UD if it's 3 rounds Alvarez via (T)KO if it's 5.

I agree the question is "can Eddie follow it" but pretty much goes for any simple style vs style gameplan.

The blue print to defeat a dangerous subgrappler has been laid since the mid-90s.

The most important factor of it though is to try and box while not getting taken down and do not engage the ground game. Gil executed his gameplan with discipline as Ippon Seoinage mentioned, that means that Eddie will have to fight a bit more in a patient manner if he's to follow Gil's blue print.

I think its clear he is a smarter and more seasoned fighter now but not sure if that means he can stick to the gameplan like Gil for 5 rounds.

Ippon, great post, btw. Its pretty rare to hear an objective post on predicting how an Aoki fight will go while trying to be both critical/realistic about both fighters.

I think i pretty much agree with everything in your post. You think Eddie will win but commenting that he wont be as disciplined as Gil and that if he messes up, he can get tapped easily again and that Aoki is the best subgrappler ever in MMA but that Eddie will still come out on top.

Very good post, great thoughts.

I think even if Eddie is not as careful as Gil in the sprawl n brawl dept, and i think he can still get taken down, the key is for him to get remain defensive on the ground, try and get back up or just stall for the standup.

Very few guys will have any business messing around with the ground game with Aoki and I dont think Eddie is one of them. This is of course diff if Eddie rocks Aoki standing first.

Anyhow, its too bad Eddie just lost to Chandler cuz that will still give Aoki naysayers their shit to spout should Aoki win yet again.

This is a great chance for Aoki to beat a top guy on American soil under an American org. Its sad that even though he beat Eddie fair and square the first time, he doesnt really get the respect for it as he should.

That said, it will be much tougher for him this time but i think he can still pull it out. He showed he can bounce back from the crushing defeat to Gil, came back out to tap Kawajiri off his first attack no less but he still has to prove he can do it to an American on American soil.

Not sure why Aoki bothered taking this fight.

He won the first fight very easily with no controversy and now Alvarez' stock has dropped significantly.

Aoki belongs in the UFC at this point, no point in him being in Bellator, he should cut ties with DREAM and get in with Zuffa.

Bellator 66 on April 20th? Where is this event taking place? Does that mean that there are Bellator events 7 straight weekends, from March 9 to April 20th?

I'm hoping this gets added to the Windsor card a couple weeks earlier.
