Robin Black - Well Dutch, the show started 2 1/2 hours late.

If you paid $350 for your table seats, hopefully you have enjoyed your 18 minutes of action to go with 2 fights left.

All joking aside this is bad for the sport in the region. The Quinte territory is ruined for this great sport.

Sad.

Bluey or JHR, please.

Black, you ungrateful little shit. Here's a look at an Olympian athlete winning a tough fight after a few years of not competing.

Yep. That about sums it up.

A smug wannabe promoter standing in front of an empty arena giving the finger to the hardcores of the sport and one of its biggest cheerleaders.

After losing almost 100 k for the investors.

After milking a charity, using it for credibility, then donating not a tenth of how much he milked it.

After using a dozen fighters, then banning media from giving them the attention they earned.

After presenting a card 2 1/2 hours late, that was far less than advertised.

After taking $300 from people on the floor, to watch 6 fights. $50 per fight????

After using these great athletes, these young warriors, for his himself and giving then no audience and no meaningful press.

After raping Belleville and the Quinte region, and damaging it forever for MMA.

Yep. The picture sums it up perfectly.

Out of curiosity, does anyone know why Top MMA was escorted out by police yet? Was a reason given?

if belleville is 10 years behind everyone else and this event set mma back another 10 years, does that mean mma hasn't yet started?

I know there is alot more background to this than what I know but will have to admit that regardless of any other facts that photo is so fucking lame. I mean how was that supposed to burn robin? your whole angle is basically that you are friends with mair and you were training partners back in the day? This about right? So basically you are trying to stick up for a buddy. right? I can appreciate the instinct but the execution is shoddy.

I mean it basically looks like two guys who's lives peaked with athletic accomplishments 20 years ago and unfortunately haven't done anything of consequence since then. This means that when someone calls your buddy out on something that you need to step up and challenge him to "take it to the mats".

It demonstrates that you don't have any actually arguments against the offending party and are too lazy to actually read any of the statements or understand the points that the other participants are trying to make (I assume lazy otherwise it might be a learning disability or another medical issue and I don't want to assume that until you have the courage to come out and release that information)

Even if it was just supposed to be a light hearted gag against someone you think is a little shit it is an EPIC FAIL as it mostly just looks like two haggered old athletes who haven't kept in shape but unfortunately haven't managed to accomplish anything else in their lives that they care about more than being the best high school wrestler in the 80's. Man Honestly wish I could get riled up and try to back up my friend Robin against his haters but mostly I just feel sad for you and hope that you can find something else to define your existence. I just want that for you so you don't end up dying alone and sad with nothing but some cheap medals and the tiny ego boost you get from hassling people on the internet like a 14yr old bully.

That being said if you want to come and train in the sport you claim to be such a fan of you are more than welcome to take some classes at MECHA MMA. you won't train with Robin as I don't trust either of you to be nice to each other but I would personally be your partner and I hope that you would get a chance to see how Robin trains and he would get a chance to see your passion for the sport. That way maybe we can show that resolving disagreements isn't about yelling on the internet and that maybe just maybe once you have sweated together you might be able to both move on with your lives and do constructive things rather that this bitchfest.

PS so how about we talk about MMA and BJJ and all the awesomeness that brought us to here in the first place. We all say we love mma so let's talk about MMA and maybe even find a way to promote the sport rather than looking like a bunch of teenagers to the rest of the world. Sound like plan.

you in? Randy? Robin?

note edited because I suck at message boards and misquoted hmeboy. sorry there

Heard the crowd was pretty sparse. I believe this is a one-and-done deal.
Funny, the cockatoo-haired fellow didn't seem to say anything trollish or slanderous, yet the only thing the donks behind this event can offer is a hackneyed, played out pic.
Glad I didn't attend.

There are pictures in the local paper & they have some shots of the crowd.  Sparse is being generous!

Ironically enough, the local paper got their results from the website that got banned!

Lachlan's post is wise beyond his years and makes a lot of sense and it incredibly funny as well.

Thanks man.

And ya maybe we all need to grow up a bit (me more than most to be honest).

Good stuff.

The poor ticket sales can be attributed to poor marketing, the advertising was pretty much non-existent, hardly anybody even knew that there were fights on Friday.

Ticket prices also didn't help, not did the OAC decimating the card.

But some positives came out of the card, there are things to work on for the next time. Small crowd, but very respectful and vocal, which means they're fairly educated on the sport. They applauded reversals and good positions, felt like Japan lol

Also, more than one fighter made their pro debut on the card - which I had previously heard the OAC wasn't going to allow.

All the fighters fought hard and it's nice to see some good emerging talent in ontario.

Cheers

Good point Mark.

It is good to look for positives. It is nice to see a couple guys get to debut on a card.

If this event was held in a small place with $30 tickets and without all the unachievable hype and broken promises a lot of these issues would be a lot more palatable.

Glad Dan's doin good man.

I would like to start seeing small shows for guys looking to go pro.

People could rent halls etc and charge enough to pay for the event and a few hundred per fighter.

This would give guys the needed experience and a venue for people to work the craft.

I think the biggest problem is that every one wants to be huge right away and make a bundle off the event. A smaller show to start would lead to the promotors learning how to run a great show and move forward.

So both promotor and fighters start learning how to be more professional.

It might even be nice to see some sort of educational event by the OAC to show potential promotors what they need to do.

Its still fairly expensive with officials and stuff, so the math doesn't work yet on small shows Dougie. One day.

I hate the OAC ed event idea. Only because, to really be successful, there's 3 to 5 years worth of learning to do to be able to make a quality show that is good for the fighters and of quality for the fans.

If you gave someone with no education in the business and no knowledge of the sport a weekend of education (just enough to fill out the commission forms), you give people who are guaranteed to fail due to lack of knowledge just enough rope to hang themselves.

Could you do a weekend course on promoting rock concerts and have enough knowledge and skills and history to successfully book an arena show? Could you do a weekend on dog shows and then be capable of successfully promoting a dog show?

There's no fast track. You need a team with knowledge of concert or event promotion, the fighters, the fight business, the sport, government beurocracy, street level and mainstream marketing, market assessment, project management, media relations, and many other skills.
The math will dictate that, although this team of 4 to 6 will need to work almost full time, they cannot make more than a nominal pay.

The leaders of this team will need years of good work and respect and a proven track record in MMA. They will need contacts that respect them and have worked with them before in 10 or 12 territories. They will need a quality relationship with press and the hard core fans.

You can learn all this with 10 or 12 progressively growing shows in small territories. You can learn it by volunteering at a dozen bigger shows and donating 50 to 100 hours of free labour per show in exchange for the learning and experience.

But you can't speed the process. Weekend courses won't help you be successful. You can't do it with will, you can't do it with confidence, and you certainly can't fake your way through it.

If failure only affected you- well have at it.

Unfortunately failure, especially failure to produce what you promised, affects the whole business.

It damages the territory.
It damages fan confidence.
It damages fighters and coaches and teams.
It burns away fans.

This is the most complicated territory of a difficult business with the most moving parts.

You can't fake your way through it.
