No disrespect to Gilbert Melendez, Nate Marquardt, Gegard Mousasi, or the plethora of world class mixed martial arts talent fighting overseas, but Pat Curran is the best fighter not currently in the UFC.

The 24-year-old became the Bellator featherweight champion Friday knocking Joe Warren out with a barrage of punches in the third round at Bellator 60.

Warren is considered one of the best wrestlers in the sport, but Curran defended his takedown attempts with ease.

Warren is also known for being able to take a world of punishment and keep moving forward, but Curran stopped him in his tracks.

Warren's killer instinct and the way he throws a wide array of strikes including knees, elbows, kicks and punches, is very much like Jose Aldo -- the current king of the featherweight castle.

His only loss since 2009 was a competitive five-round decision to former Bellator lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez.

He isn't even the best featherweight in Bellator, that honor would go to Patricio Freire

BFC is building a sick 145 division... top 5 group of Curran, Freire, Sandro, Straus and Bezerra could absolutely take on the UFC FW top 5 and hold their own.

Hard to say but Freire is up there for sure. But there's so much talent outside the UFC how can we possibly single one man out? Phone Post

Because Bellator is quite possibly the 2nd most popular mma org in n. america and Pat Curran had name recognition before he even made it to any major org. Is there plenty of fighters even more deserving? You betcha.

I think Sandro is better than Pitbull and could beat Curran in a rematch. Lots of studs at featherweight in Bellator though between those 3.

Curran seems to be a whole different animal at featherweight. One of the better counter strikers in the division, but lately he can turn it on when he has to get the job done.

I love Bellator's featherweight division, can't wait for Curran/Patricio or an eventual rematch with Sandro

How can you generalise all fighters outside the UFC in every weight class and say curran is the best? Best 145er you may have an argument but this is a stupid article Phone Post

Curran is definitely in the discussion IMO.

Bellator from 135-155 has just tons of talent.

Curran, Chandler, Dantes, Straus, the Pitbulls, etc. all look like legitimate top guys in their weightclasses. Since none of these guys are going to be in the UFC for some time I would love to see Bellator pick up some more of the names in Japan like Bibiano Fernandes, Imanari, Crusher, Takaya, etc. to further that depth.

I also think Bellator needs to consider stepping away from the tourney formats in their lighter divisions. Tourneys are great for building divisions & making names, but there is so much talent there now that it's really unnecessary to do it below 170.

TheUltimateLurker - Michael Chandler flattens Melendez and beats Curran in my book. Pretty certain Eddie V. beats Gilbert as well, and im a huge Melendez fan. If we are talking best fighter p4p outside of Zuffa its probably Chandler. If its the best fighter just outside of the UFC than it would be Gegard hands down.

Mousasi isn't even among the 10 best fighters outside the UFC IMO. His wrestling still sucks & he fades regularly. It shouldn't have taken him so long to beat a totally overmatched & overwhelmed OSP and also there's no way his fight with Jardine should have been close at any point. His stock should be way down ATM as he's done nothing but take steps backward since destroying Babalu.

That said, I'm still a big fan of Mousasi and he does have top contender potential, but in Strikeforce alone IMO King Mo, Cormier, Gil, and Rockhold are all better fighters, and there are others like Tarec Saffiedine, Derek Brunson, etc. who may not be too far behind.

Outside of Zuffa, it's Hector Lombard

Then Michael Chandler

Then Pat Curran
