Eric Prindle has been forced to withdraw from his Bellator 61 main event with Thiago Santos due to illness, Sherdog.com confirmed with a source close to the bout on Thursday.

Prindle, 35, has come down with flu-like symptoms that will prevent him from competing; the extent of his ailment is currently unknown. MMAJunkie.com first reported the news Thursday morning. The bout is expected to be rescheduled for an event later in the season, though the promotion has not yet commented on the matter.

Prindle was set to meet Santos in a rematch of their Bellator 59 clash this past November, which ended in a no contest after Prindle suffered a kick to the groin and was unable to continue. The contest served as the Season 5 heavyweight tournament final, and -- when completed -- will determine the next challenger for Bellator heavyweight king Cole Konrad.

Beaten just once in nine professional outings, Prindle had won seven consecutive fights before his bout with Santos ended in a no contest. Known for his heavy hands and large frame, “The American Soldier” owns three Bellator wins, posting victories over Abe Wagner and Ron Sparks to advance to the Season 5 tournament final.

Ten years younger than his foe, Santos had notched four straight wins prior to his first clash with Prindle. A Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt, the Rio Heroes veteran owns half of his career victories via submission and owns notable triumphs over Geronimo dos Santos, Josh Burns and Neil Grove.

Seems fishy, i was just reading an article where santos was claiming the kick didn't even hit the groin and that prindle wanted out and doesn't want this fight. Seems likely now. Phone Post

Ariel tweeted that this morning....so is it off because of Santos missing weight, or Prindle being sick? The fuck Phone Post

sin_tax - Where is that mentioned in this article?

I see you changed your comment to take out the name calling.

Your momma would be proud.
MMA Junkie said it is next week now.  And indeed I took out the name calling as it didn't seem fair (and I didn't want to disappoint my momma).

http://mmajunkie.com/news/27850/bellator-61-headliner-eric-prindle-likely-to-scratch-with-flu-like-symptoms.mma

However, Bellator CEO today told our sister site, USAToday.com, the fight is canceled and will be pushed back a week to Bellator 62. A middleweight-tournament bout between Maiquel "Big Rig" Falcao and Norman Paraisy has taken the headlining spot for Bellator 61.

LOL @ didn't hit the groin. Did you see the fight? Dude straight up gas pedaled him. Couldn't have hit anything other than his balls.

Prindle even posted a picture on twitter of his swollen testicle...

You're misremembering, sir. It was no gas pedal. He slap-kicked him in the ass. It was really no where near the groin. It wasn't even hard at all. Edwin Figueroa and Josh Shockley took way harder shots in recent fights and both continued the fight and won.

He's absofruitly not ducking, as it seems he was very motivated to risk serious health problems in order to make the cut, but he has only himself to blame for being in position. Bellator or the commission has to save the fighters from their own pride/competitiveness. 99% of people who watched last Friday hoped the commission would have done a better job at carrying out that objective, in both the Curran-Warren and Da Silva-Reardanz fights.

Contrary to what's being spun from, I'm assuming the Prindle camp, Santos' weight was far from the problem here. If he was 300 pounds, they wouldn't have re-scheduled the fight for next week. Santos has looked physically about the same in every Bellator fight he's been in, and didn't used to fight at Super Heavy unlike Prindle. Prindle has admitted his weight and health was the issue on Twitter now.

Anyways, good luck in your fight tonight. Big fan and expecting great things in the future from you. You look like a beast. Would try to make some money off you but don't see any lines out there.

Did you guys hear him on Mauro's podcast yesterday? Why was he blaming Thaigo for the bout being off? Seems strange to me.

I don't think he's a liar. He's genuinely one of the nicest, most honorable guys in the sport. It must be that someone in his camp is feeding with a lot of false information so this can be spun to not make him look like the bad guy.

If he's admitted his weight and health was the issue now, seems pretty uncool, unprofessional, and unethical to publicly blame the other guy on a podcast. I just don't understand how he could not know this was his fault, its not like anyone would begrudge the dude a delay if he was seriously ill. I think he just didn't want to take responsibility for it when Mauro started badgering him about it.

He has NOT admitted his weight is the issue, look at his facebook or twitter. The rumor I'm hearing from those close to the situation (not just Eric) is indeed that Thiago is really overweight.

Just read Thiago and his manager saying he was only like 6 pounds off and felt fine. They are saying this is absolutely not their fault.
