TheRealMKL - After playing with FreeMind and Inspiration 9 I have to admit that Inspiration is the easier to navigate between the two. I think I'm going to start mapping out my own game and sitting with my professor to really tighten up and build off some concepts.

Thanks for the advice StLRPh

I'd be pretty interested to hear JW's take on this. Keep me posted.

Only issue I'm having is not being able to export to pdf. It's completely software/config related though I'm sure. Phone Post

lazlo - Its a good start, but I think you are missing some of the essential character of a mind map. A mind map should aid you in recall of the information. Right no all I see is a bunch of lines coming together. Really its the same information that is conveyed in the table of contents.

What you need to do is organize it and add some other layer of abstraction to get it into you head. If I asked you to draw that from memory I doubt you could. When you can do that, then you really know it.

My first recommendation would be to organize it with the positional hierarchy in mind. Then group like techniques together. Then create some kind of naming or visual mnemonic to link together the groups of techniques so you can reacall them. Then practice recreating the map from memory.

I hope this make sense. I've been using mind maps to learn things, and to do it takes some effort, but that is the point. You invest some creative abstraction to help you learn faster.

Good point! I've been spending a lot of time lately learning mnemonic techniques as well. I thought about trying to put together something for beginners on www.memrise.com

That's a learning site focusing mainly on language learning using association techniques but you can also create your own course using their technology. An example would be remembering the spanish word for shoes (zapatos) by showing an image of lightning trying to zap your toes, but being unable to because you are wearing shoes. Creative imagery.

I thought it might be an interesting way to get new students to be able to remember certain details or concepts in certain positions, like using imagery to describe getting the underhook in half guard , or blocking the second hand to prevent an x choke from the guard.

Interesting stuff!
