I might attempt an Eastern WA elk hunt this fall, but clearly my .243 won't cut it. ANy recommendations on a new rifle? I'm righty but shoot lefty so even left handed bolt guns suck to operate. I'd prefer a pump or auto. Nothing that costs more than a used motorcyle please!

Thanks in advance.

jeez, no bolt action??

i think remington makes a pump action 30-06.

you could also look into a modified ar-10

honestly though, a bolt action shouldnt be that big of a deal. one shot should be enough. get a 30-06, super versatile round.

Dont get a pump rifle, they are not the quality the use to be. and 30-06 is cool but if your getting a rifle for out west get a rifle for out west 300wsm or another magnum something solid i would go 300wsm. Elk are big animals. sure shot placement is everything but hit it with a nosler accubond from a 300wsm it wont get back up.

BAR, so badass, always reminds me of Bonnie and Clyde. Clyde rocked one with a cut down barrel.

Here it is.

The jury is still out. I'm definitely not getting any of the big manum rounds. I'm definitely limiting my choices to .308, 30-06 and 7mm Rem Mag. Found this gem: www.browning.com/products/catalog/firearms/detail.asp

I'm pretty sold and the BAR safari at this point (in 7mm Rem mag). It would take something pretty amazing to sway me a this point.

doesn't the blackout have 30-30 ballistic characteristics? Why would I take a 30-30 after Elk. Cool deer gun though.

You and Jack Funk. I won't buy until after spring Turkey season though.

^I think your shot placement is better than mine. I've shot small deer with .243 nosler and had them run a mile before dropping.

I bought the BAR today in 7mm Rem Mag (and lefty too!) for $875 NIB. Now it's time to ponder what scope to buy.

If I hunt elk it will be in the cascadesor the olympics. Not exactly rocky mountain visibility. However my deer spot is in the scablands/potholes area by Cheney, WA. I'm probably going for a 3x9-40 or 3.5x10-40mm. I'm thinking Leupold unless someone else makes optics in the USA.

Redfield is as US made scope. They are the bargain family of Leupold scopes.
