On March 30, 50-year-old Maurice Smith returned to MMA action for the first time in nearly four years, picking apart Jorge Cordoba before knocking him out in the third round of their matchup at Resurrection Fighting Alliance 2. Smith expects to fight three more times this year for the organization, and has his sights set on the sport's elite.

“It was good to get back in there and play the game,” Smith told the Sherdog Radio Network’s “Savage Dog Show. "Age seemed to be everybody’s big concern, or the issue with everybody, but for me, it was just another fight. The guy was a tough kid. … He was above his level, but again, his heart definitely matched mine.”

“My goal is to win the fight,” Smith said. “Sure, everybody wants to see a knockout and a great brawl, but I like the art of fighting. I don’t like so much all this brawling. If I can beat you on skills that you should have -- you should be able to block or defend -- I’m happy with that. I have a different mindset than probably most fighters that are kill, kill, kill.”

“Getting to [205] for the first time was quite hard. That was tremendously hard for me. It took me seven hours to lose [the last several pounds], but once I got to the weight class, I wasn’t weak or what have you. But it shouldn’t take seven hours -- that’s what you’ve got to learn from that.”

Now that Smith has stepped back in the cage and scored a win, he wants to keep going. In fact, he expects to fight three more times this year in the RFA. He also thinks that with his experience and his striking skills, he can .

“What’s the point in fighting if you can’t [compete with the top light heavyweights in the sport]? Listen, I’m not focused on looking for a title necessarily, but I want to fight the best guys there are. Who’s to say that a guy who’s 205 and at the elite level is going to kick my butt? It’s not because of my age that I’m going to lose. … The guy that’s going to beat me is going to beat me because he’s a better fighter, not because of my age.”

I heart Maurice Smith.

Fedors Jim Jams - maurice smith vs mark coleman

That was the first event I caught, and was immediately a huge mma and Mo Smith fan.  Seeing grapplers/wrestlers dominate that entire event and then have Mo Smith turn the tables on Coleman in the main event was fucking awesome.

I think that he took on a softball & basically a heavy bag in the 2nd & 3rd round.Let`s be realistic.

Just because a fighters best years are far far behind him...that is no reason to match him up against a favorable opponent unless it was for ticket sales & name recognition for the promotion (which I`m sure it probably was)

I'm a long time fan of his going back to the EFC days.
Much like Randy, he could probably keep up with some of the guys on the UFC roster. Thanks to the sport’s increased focus on striking (and drug testing…) he might be better off now than a few years ago.

I like Mo.  He's a great guy.  Even at his age, like he said, he can outskill a lot of guys in the cage.

If he was matched well, he could be competitive with a number of name fighters at 205lb. Gilbert Ivel just won last weekend as well, that would be an interesting matchup.

The Conan result definitely was pretty amazing. That was the first high profile beating BJJ got here in the US. Yes, Zinoviev beat Sperry, but that was after being more or less dominated prior. Smith did well for the entire Conan fight.

I'll always remember that John Peretti insisted that Smith coming in with ankle wraps meant that his ankles were shot. WTF?
