From what ive heard from competitors... Their whole event was useless, too small, not properly managed, almost 3 hours delayed, no brackets posted, most mats (out of only 4) were empty while 1 was in use.
The people who i heard this from will never go back.

Too bad, apparently the organizers were patting themselves on the back... Phone Post

I was there and can confirm everything that the above post states. One of the worst run tournaments I have attended. It would have been tolerable if the organizers maybe said that it was their first event and we are learning from it, but they really believe that it was a top notch event. And the event website was the most useless registration site ever.

Not going to be returning to this one.

I am glad some one else posted first so people realize it is not just sour grapes from me. Truth is the truth.

Since I competed and reffed at the event lets clear up a few things.
Did the event run late ? YES
Were there empty mats? YES
Were there good reasons for those things to happen? YES

The problem is that people do not really understand what was intended for this event. The idea was to give every competitor at least two matches aka double elimination. In some cases guys/girls were doing round robin instead of a regular single elimination bracket, which gave them 4 matches guaranteed EACH. That idea definitely backfired and Blayne out of all people was not happy about it.

From my perspective - you can't make everybody happy regardless of how good your intentions are. People always cry about something. I can give you a couple of examples of why that happens:
1. Parents registering their kids into wrong divisions, forcing the organizer to redo the brackets on the day of the event. Solution - DQ the competitor without a refund and teach parents a lesson.
2. Competitors running around the venue after their division is called and then not being immediately available to fight when called to the mat. Solution - DQ the competitor and teach them a lesson.
3. Those who don't have anybody to fight in their division and then get organizers to find a match for them on the day of the event. Just do what IBJJF does - give those guys gold medal and send them home without a match.
4. Double elimination and round robin formats making your event run later than expected. Only do single elimination brackets so that people who want things done quickly can lose their first match in under a minute and be out of $50. O wait those same people will then complain about only having one chance to fight and losing $50 in under a minute.
Should I continue?
Point is this - if you want things changed, then approach the organizers after the event with a list of suggestions to be made for next year. I know for a fact that Blayne will listen to any constructive criticism; you just need to have a little more to say than "the whole event was useless".

I was at the tournament in NY instead of this one, however:

Once again, I'd like to point out that wrestling (and I believe Judo) have done double elimination brackets for decades without issues of tournaments getting behind. Any tournament getting behind is either due to other reasons (like the other points you made and/or a lack of organization) OR they failed to properly study this format.

Shining examples of double elimination exist. Locally and internationally.

Cory. you have a good point, judo and wrestling have done double elimination for decades, Blayne has done her first tournament, lets give her a change to fix the small issues they had.

The tournament was not "the whole event was useless" like said. there were some issue and they will be addressed for sure.

Congrats to Blayne and Chris for putting out a good tournament in Niagara Region.

If you ever lost a Jiu Jitsu match...

Should your coach say "you're useless and should probably quit. Rickson Gracie has been competing flawlessly for years, I'm not going to waste my time on you".

Or, should he offer advice, and tell you where you need to improve? Did you hold your head high after your first loss, and were proud that you accomplished being able to compete, despite that it didn't work out as you had hoped?

I'm all for learning from a loss, especially the FIRST match of a tournament (I've been there enough).

But there are times when you just have the bad luck of facing the guy who wins the whole thing or another person who just is a complete style nightmare for your game.

It happens, but a double elimination format would really make people feel that they got their money's worth. At least that's how I feel anyways.

Yes you learn, yes your coach will help you out with what you messed up with. But let's talk DOLLARS/TIME.

x dollars to sign up
x dollars for gas (meals/hotel if you are travelling far)
not to mention any dieting or other "non-fun" stuff to lose in a minute.

It takes it's toll, I know I piece those things together after a first round loss.

Like i said.. Im reporting the information from competitors that did indeed pay the fees to register and compete and help your tourney gain some steam.
I say useless because the people that went reported they had no idea who they were fighting or when.. And the worst part was the warm ups, cool downs and wait times to warm up and wait again and again.

I wish you all the luck and success in the world I truly do... But instead of shooting the messenger.. Get your shit together.
These guys have told you the website is tough to navigate, the registration was hell and now the results arent found.

I do wish you success and i hope you do manafe to address and to fix the problems that plague your event.

I can only comment on the saturday. It was behind but we were out by three or so, it wasn't bad at all. A little confusing but I certainly wouldn say it was terrible by any stretch. Phone Post
