"If (a teammate) can beat me, they can beat me," Liddell said on Monday's edition of The MMA Hour. "It is what it is. They deserve to fight me then. I'm not going to hold back some guy that's in my camp if he wants to fight me. That's not my thing.

"It's just a personal choice and a personal opinion, but I think eventually, hey you guys are going at it, then go out and have two beers together afterwards. Go out there and prove who's best that day, and go out and be friends again."

Obviously, by now it's clear both Evans and Jones see the issue a little differently. An oft-repeated axiom says to always fight with a clear mind and never let emotion cloud your judgment. Yet throughout the lead-up to UFC 145, emotions have run higher than they have for any light heavyweight title defense in years, leading some to speculate if the bad blood could be a detriment to either competitor.

But Liddell had a few wars of words of his own back in day, and the way he sees it, making things personal wasn't ever a bad call.

"I think that helps for me," Liddell admitted with a chuckle.

"Some guys are better when they don't like the guy. For me, it helps me train. ... I say it all the time, but it makes it a lot easier when there's that back-of-your-mind motivation that ‘I do not like this guy. There's no way I want to let this guy beat me, so I'm going to be in the best shape I can be in.' I think (Jones and Evans) have got that."

Alcohol is a dangerous, addictive drug. Look at Chuck's history of alcoholism for example.
I think it would be much safer if teammates just smoked some sweet mary jane afterwards.

stonepony - Exactly. Chuck is expressing the male perspective. Diaz and Rashad, the female perspective. Real men, can punch each other without having to hate each other. Many times, the kid you hated on the schoolyard, became one of your best friends after you punched each other in the face once or twice.

It's women, and gangstas, who look at fighting differently. Women don't become friends with the girl they fought in school. They harass each other, until one of them develops an eating disorder or kills herself. Same deal with street-goons like the Diaz brothers. Can't shake hands with Cerrone, like a man, because you're not a man. Nate was friendly after their fight, but that was a show. If they fight again, Nate will have to hate him again.

It's the female mindset. Gang-members can't get in to a fight, and shake hands and everything is gravy. Somebody gets a gun.

I'd take each situation on a case by case basis taking into account the benefits of the fight, the negatives and the closeness and character of the relationship. I wouldn't want to fight a good friend for anything less than a championship.

Does anyone realize how many boxers had to fight their former sparring partners, and did so without a single complaint?

Chuck is a fighter, and a man. He doesn't care about hurting someone's feelings, and neither should anyone that considers themselves a professional fighter. If your training partner can't get over the fact that you beat his ass in a fight, then fuck him.

Proving that just because you have a 1/1/01 join date, doesn't mean you're intelligent, thoughtful, or can even reply as an adult. "Tard boy," really? That's really what you went with? I'm sure that was hilarious when you were in 2nd grade.

Unless its a title match or for a title shot then it should be avoided if possible. To make teammates fight [and causing a who trains with who situation at the club] just because Dana has a hard on for it isn't enough of a reason.

According to Chuck they never were teammates. They trained together a little bit early in their career that's it. They weren't BFF like Tito made it out to be. Phone Post

I would most definitely fight my friends/team mates. The fact that we are friends would make me want to beat them even more!!

I fought my best friend who was like my brother in an Army Boxing match. We smashed the shit out of each other for three rounds, got patched up and then went on the piss TOGETHER that same night. We trained hard, fought hard and partied harder! We never lost respect for each other because we new it was only a fight, nothing personal, just 'business'.

We met in basic training, went to the same unit, lived together, went on operations together, fought together and nearly died together. He was and is my brother.

We still remain friends and I was the best man at his wedding. People need to get over themselves, it's just a fight. Phone Post

Chuck Liddell is absolutely correct.

This isn't a team sport.  Lets stop trying to make it into one, shall we?

Every man for himself, and let the best man win.

I agree with your general statement Stonepony.

After a fight between two men, a certain bond is often made between them that really can't be explained to those who have not experienced it.

However, this is not a schoolyard throwdown, this is their lives, careers and their status in the eyes of millions of fans.

So for some of these guys who have to fight ex teammates, it's the fact that there were moments they trained together and one said "When I do that move, I like to do it this way".. "This is how I set it up..."

So I can see where the fighters are coming from.

On the other hand, nobody forced them to make these teams and camps, they evolved organically, and they need to just deal with it.

Especially when Jon is the champ. Do you want to be a fucking LHW champion? Then he's the you have to beat, and it doesn't matter if he's your brother-in-law or teammate.
