Just returned from the Nationals and was looking to hear feedback. I met Gary Butts and watched his daughters Crystal and Erin compete. The 73K men's black belt brkt was brutal and the toughest this year. All the competitors had bruises/cuts/scrapes. Bobby Lee had a mild concussion, hope he gets better. The addition of the brown belt brkt was a huge plus. Some impressive winners. Breakout year for 66k 2nd place Austin Cook when he beat Takete with tomenage for ippon just into the beginning of the match. 90K was very competitive when St. leger doesn't finish in the medal brkt. One BJJ guy I met was David Mendez who fought in the 100K. The "star" performer was of course Takahashi of Tenri the way be just ipponed almost everyone. His judo was so far superior especially in his gripping you knew you were watching a high level competitor. Sunday was messed up with the delay in redoing the masters/brown belt/visualy impared brkts that delayed the competition about 3 hours.

It was nice meeting you, I had great time at the senior national. Although Crystal and I could have done with out the stomach flu. Erin said that you are a really nice guy. There were alot of young players upsetting some of the top and more players. Southern California did really well we took 9 players and came home with 7 medals in the senior division. Our girls all medalled. I very impressed my the level of matwork I saw and the new care system seem to work great. Phone Post

Gary's daughter Erin is a sweetheart, her first senior level competition at age 14. Another Kayla Harrison type. So gracious off the mat but a terror on the mat. Delpopolo,Kyle,Travis all passed on this tournament. Higashi was there but taking 1 year off for Masters studies. Eldred was the class of the 73k field, ippon everyone with his ground work. Best osae-komi player I have seen in a US player.

SH- very good question why there wasn't any media coverage/broadcast. I will forward your question to the judo higherups and try and get a response. Many of our top judokas skipped this tournament with the Miami World cup/US Open in May. They did announce they will broadcast live the fight between Delpopolo and Eldred for the 73K spot on the US Olympic team at this tuornament. If Eldred wins the first fight it will be 2/3. If Delpopolo wins the first fight he has the spot because he has the higher world ranking.

Just got the word 5/12 2:30 PM the live broadcast of the match between Delpopolo and Eldred for the USA Olympic 73K brkt. If Delpopolo wins he gets the slot. If Eldred wins then best 2/3. Have to check the USA judo website for the broadcast is my guess.

I can see Eldred pushing it to the best of 3... but not winning 3 of the 4 matches they'd have to fight.

This is such a complete contrast in styles. Nick wins almost all his fights from throws(uchimata, etc), Eldred wins almost all his fights by transition from throw attempts to matwork- pins. But they know each other so well this is a toss up. Eldrew will look for a counter to Nick's throw attempt near the end of the 5 min mark. Eldred is very good at strategy and pushing the match to last second. Nick will be the aggresor and usually keeps a throw near the end he hasn't used previously to catch Eldred.
