Ultimately I would like to rig a portion of my roof with panels. I have a 40' x 35' side of my roof which is relatively flat and gets really good unobstructed sun. I'm not sure where to begin with this project. Phone Post

I have a ton of specs, but most is equations and codes, and some of that particular to my state.
The funny(evil) thing is, silicone is some of the plentiest elements on earth, but most expensive.
It's ridiculously overpriced.
I may look into purchasing pricing in large quantities, or advantageous positions to acquire it freely.

KVR's homesteading forum has cool projects him and others have undertaken.

Energy should be free, it's everywhere.
Ah, but the harness... Phone Post 3.0

Whats the latest and greatest our power bill are getting to be over 400$ a month during the winter for some reason. Shouldnt take long to pay off a solar system would it. Phone Post 3.0

Depends.
If I were to attack the issue(and I don't own yet), I would research how the environment, vacuums, and natural courses affect the structure.
Of course the power department brings up windows, outlets, insulation and such.
But there are ancient ways to take advantage or create a warmer environment.

It completely depends where you are as far a solar.
Many power companies now give you credit on your bill if you use a set up where your solar gives back to the grid during idle times. In other words, they pay you.
Upkeep is extremely important, cleaning panels and knowing how the environment degradates your setup is important. That includes ecological/biological and lifeforms small and large.

Sorry I can't be more informative as to the latest and greatest setups.
I've only installed a little, not bought or maintained myself.
Good luck!
