A flurry of calls from UFC officials to MMA managers this week has brought a bevy of welterweights to Las Vegas to try out for the 16th installment of "The Ultimate Fighter."

For the next season officials have scrapped open auditions and opted instead to interview potential contestants directly.

Fighters were flown in earlier this week on Sunday, and interviews began Monday.

Those called frequently were veterans of previous open tryouts, though some who hadn't previously auditioned were also accepted, the managers added.

White said coaches for the upcoming 16th season haven't been chosen.

i hope they do something to resurrect TUF. it's gotten so stale, and the way they're doing the live format is just terrible.

I would really like to want to see this show again, but if it comes back in the same format I don't think i'll watch.

But I've got a feeling they're trying to shake things up, so it could be great.

The Comeback 2 is the only answer and long overdue. There are so many guys that would benefit from TUF exposure and the show could certainly use some bigger profiles too.

The comeback season was intriguing the first time because of the title shot. That was a significant prize but it's not likely they'd do it again. Just handing out the same contract as every other winner gets wouldn't be all that exciting. Phone Post

I liked Live TUF. I would prefer a 24/7 style with fighter bios and a build-up to a live fight over taped fights so the editors can put together a reality show package for the first 45 minutes. I stooped watching the latter kind of format years ago. Live TUF actually brought me back. Just put it on Thursday instead of Friday.

It's time for TUF to move to a fight show instead of a reality TV show. Let the guys talk to their families and watch TV. Let them get sleep. I don't give a shit if they are going stir crazy and want to piss on each other. I care about their training and watching the fight. Tape their mat skills. Here's an idea, tape the coaches during training so casual fans can see how fighters put together a striking style or setup a sweep. It doesn't need to be an instructional exactly, but I'd rather watch something about fighting than just a bunch of fighters acting like dipshits.

Like it or not, a big part of the demographic tunes in for all the drama and shit talking. It's almost impossible to edit that or build it up with the live format.

Friday slot was brutal too. Phone Post

From that article I would say it seems unlikely, it mentions that they are mainly veterans of previous open tryouts.

So I would say that would reduce the chance of really big names being used.

I really hope I'm wrong though. Phone Post

Maybe something like Rookies Vs. Veterans could be interesting. Promosing prospects against veterans that have been cut from the UFC.It could give the combination of attracting viewers who remember these former UFC fighters, but also allow new guys to get hype if they can beat them.
It can forn natural team rivalries (one team looking at the other as washed up hasbeens, and other looking at the new guys as unproven rookies) Perhaps the only risk is that the UFC would really need to focus on recruiting the best possible prospects, or the UFC veterans could make it a mismatch very quickly.

I'm not saying I would watch a second season of comeback, but I would certainly be more likely to watch that than I would a normal season of TUF.

The article is a little misleading. They used the 170 pounders that were selected last season but not used. No flurry just call backs to people who had already made it through the process. They are not rushing anything.

I think that was the case in the past, but I'm not sure if the environment is the same. I'm not sure what the stats are, but I would guess that TUF isn't pulling in that many new viewers. In the beginning it was necessary to have the reality BS simply to get attention, but now I think there are more hardcore and casual fans who are interested in the fight game, no the reality show BS. I think going to a more fight-centric format would bring more viewers back than reality show BS will gain new viewers.
