Not too many moons ago, UFC president Dana White was on the brink of forcing Wanderlei Silva to hang up his MMA gloves. “The Axe Murderer” was starting to get put to sleep on a regular basis and White didn’t want for one of the game’s most popular athletes to end his career on other fighters’ highlight reels. White had forced UFC Hall of Famer Chuck Liddell into retirement for the same reason.

However, despite losing seven out of his last 10 scraps, including a unanimous decision to Rich Franklin on Saturday at UFC 147, it appears White won’t be convincing the 35-year-old to hit the retirement home anytime soon.

“Wanderlei almost won that fight [against Franklin],” White stated on FUEL TV’s post-fight show. “It is tough to say [what's next for him]. He used to be my arch nemesis over at Pride.

“But since he came to the UFC, he has been great, acting like he has been in the UFC for a long time. He has been honest and great and he is going to be with the UFC for a long time, whether he is fighting or not.”

Good. Exciting fighter that brings it every time. Fuck wins and losses. I'd pay to watch Wand fight 10 times over the kind of fight that Guida or Condit fought on recent memory. I love Wand. Phone Post

Yeah, but Wanderlei only turned it on for 90 seconds (a minute at the end of the second and the last 30 seconds of the fifth) of a 25 minute fight.  The rest was Franklin just jabbing him.  Wasn't that exciting.

Has anybody ever been cut for losing in a FOTN? That had to be close to a fight-of-the-year candidate.

Rich and Wand both looked outstanding.

Great statement from Dana, Wandy has paid his dues and deserves the UFC's support even after his fighting days are over. Phone Post

He was something like, 5 and 7, but I guess Wand has a similar UFC record. Was that a TUF card? Maybe it was a weak card and not really a stellar FOTN?

I couldn't agree more. There is a list of fighters that I will not miss cause I know they are gonna bring it. Wand and Franklin are on that list. I always pull for any of those guys to win, but either way I appreciate the warrior sprit that they bring every time. That is not an easy thing to do.

Somebody else pointed out Jardine too. That sucks because I liked both the Pauls (Kelly and Tailor), their 1st round was one of the best in UFC history IMO. I guess there have been weak cards here and there, and even on weak cards there has to be a FOTN. I'm wondering if anybody has ever been cut, after a really stellar performance. Wand looked better than he has in a long time, so did Rich. I don't think either fighter would have lost ground on a loss there.

Probably better commentator than Lesnar. I'm a Lesnar fan, but, he was so out of his element it was hilarious.

Good to hear. Well deserved. Wand is good for the sport. He can head up their Brazilian division or something.

It was a fantastic fight.

I love Wand and I didn't think it was all that great of a fight.  He got picked apart from range and barely threw for the majority of the fight.

I think Wand is awesome but it does always seem as though he is desperately kissing the UFC's ass. You know deep down inside he was in Japan being paid and treated like a movie star.

I think it was more of a fan's fight to watch. 2 great fan favorites going at it. Wand's 2nd round is something of greatness, but it gassed him out bad. 3rd round had him doing nothing but recovering and staying safe. Both fighters were recovering. 4th was more of Wand recovering for another burst. 5th was out of the woods for both but too little too late, I think he should have started around the 2nd minute mark rather than 1 minute left.

There is a reason so many believe the 2nd round should be a 10-8. It affected the rest of the fight with the stress it put on both fighters because Wand's output of destruction was so great it strained the ability of both of them to continue aggressively.

I would not have a single issue if this was Wand's last fight ever. He went out there and displayed his greatness in a fantastic attempt to win the fight. IMO, his age and other factors have just made it impossible for him to main event for 5 rounds anymore. I could see him in a 3 round fight against someone matched right.

Autographs at 25 bucks a pop = Wandy making money for the UFC! 50 if it's an autographed picture.
