Mistborn trilogy - Brandon Sanderson
First law trilogy - Joe Abercrombie
The dark angel trilogy - Brent Weeks
Demon cycle - Peter V Brett
Riftwar trilogy - Raymond Feist

And if you fancy a bit of comic fantasy, Terry Pratchett is a genius. Phone Post

"...How many books in the The Black Company series?..."

I have most of them...let's see, it's broken into three or four groups. I think that there are three in the first part, three or four in the second, and three or four in the third. The last three are very large...and for the most part, pretty good. There is also a separate book with some of the starting characters that is also pretty good

Warning; Cook is NOT afraid to kill off main characters. I mean, real main characters, not simply sidekicks

If you read his books, you'll know where my handle comes from pretty quick :)

Just finished the Malazan Books of the Fallen, took a year to read all 10, and it was some serious reading. I compare it to the Lost of fantasy.

Once I finished that, I moved onto Joe Abercrombie's First Law trilogy. That series was fucking bad ass. The Bloody-Nine is one of the coolest fantasy characters. I'm about to move on to his stand-alone novels which I hear are even better than the trilogy as his writing is getting more refined.

I also recommend Rothfuss's books as well. Great reads but not a complete series yet.

Good post. The first 3 on the list are winners for sure.

I am a huge fan of the Gentleman Bastard series. The first book is The Lies of Locke Lemora. I can't say enough about it. It sucks that there is only 2 books in the series. Book 3 is set up to be filled with badassery.

Another series I have enjoyed is the Felix Castor series by Mike Cary. It is considered urban fantasy I believe. The main character is an exorcist that has loads of personal problems. Think of it as a R rates version of the Dresden Files. Phone Post

Mencken -  Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss is good, but i've heard his second book is a huge drop off in terms of quality

Machine250 - Joe Aercrombie

The First Law Trilogy
Also this

*note it's Abercrombie

Great characters and twists. Also liked it cause it's a little "darker".

The spin off "Best Served Cold" is also damn good read too... Phone Post
