15 Minute Dry Fire Program


The setup for this program is simple. One USPSA target at 7 yards. A miniature target is fine, as long as you adjust your distance from that target accordingly.



Group Shooting

10 Shots on upper A (no par time)



Draws

Draw and engage the target with 2 shots

5 reps at slow pace (no par time)

5 reps from hands relaxed at your side. Par time of 1.7 seconds (novice), 1.3 seconds (laid back), 1.0 Seconds (expert), .8 seconds (crazy)

5 reps from surrender at Par time of 1.7 seconds (novice), 1.3 seconds (laid back), 1.0 Seconds (expert), .8 seconds (crazy)

5 reps turning draw at Par time of 2.0 seconds (novice), 1.5 seconds (laid back), 1.2 Seconds (expert), 1 second (crazy)

10 reps drawing while taking a step in any direction (be sure to vary direction). Vary start position between hands at sides and surrender. Par time of 1.9 seconds (novice), 1.4 seconds (laid back), 1.2 Seconds (expert), 1 second (crazy)



Reloading

Start aiming at the target. Execute a reload in slow motion. Focus on getting the gun in proper position, getting a good grip on the fresh magazine, and looking the reload into the gun. Be sure to work back through all your pouches. (no par time) 5 reps

From a surrender start, engage the upper head box with 2 shots, then reload and engage the lower A zone with 4 shots. 5 reps at Par time of 3.6 seconds (novice), 3.2 seconds (laid back), 2.8 Seconds (expert), 2.5 seconds (crazy)

Engage the target with 2 shots, reload and engage strong hand only with 2 shots, reload and engage target with 2 shots weak hand only. 5 reps at Par time of 7 seconds (novice), 5.0 seconds (laid back), 4.4 Seconds (expert), 3.8 seconds (crazy)

Start facing 90 degrees to the left or the right of the target (alternate between hands at sides and surrender). Draw and engage the upper A zone with 2 shots. Take one step in any direction, reload, and engage the lower A zone. Be sure to vary the direction you step during the reload. Also vary facing to the left or the right for the start position. 5 reps at Par time of 4 seconds (novice), 3.2 seconds (laid back), 2.7 Seconds (expert), 2.3 seconds (crazy)



Miscellaneous gun handling



Start with gun “unloaded” and holstered with your hands in the surrender position. Draw and “load” the gun (magazine coming off your belt), engage the upper A zone with 2 shots. 5 reps at Par time of 3.5 seconds (novice), 2.5 seconds (laid back), 2.1 Seconds (expert), 1.7 seconds (crazy)

Start facing “uprange” (alternate between hands at sides and surrender). Turn and engage target with 2 rounds, reload, and with at least one knee touching ground engage target with 2 more rounds. 5 reps at Par time of 4 seconds (novice), 3.0 seconds (laid back), 2.5 Seconds (expert), 2.2 seconds (crazy)

Start with one knee touching the ground and wrists above shoulders. Stand and engage target with 2 rounds. Alternate which knee is touching ground 5 reps at Par time of 2 seconds (novice), 1.5 seconds (laid back), 1.2 Seconds (expert), 1 second (crazy)

Setup:

The targets are 10 feet from the front of the box. The targets are 2 feet apart, edge to edge. The box is a 3 foot by 3 foot box.

To use these par times, you must use 1/3rd scale targets. The distance relationship is changed if any other size is used.

Group Shooting:

10 Shots on upper A (no par time)

Draws:

Draw and engage the center target with 2 shots

5 reps at slow pace (no par time)

Start outside the box with both feet touching some part of box with your gun in hand. At the tone, move across the box shoot any upper A zone with 2 shots. Be sure to vary start position. 5 reps at a Par time of 2.5 seconds (novice), 2.0 seconds (laid back), 1.6 Seconds (expert), 1.3 seconds (crazy)

Start with both feet touching rear of the box while facing up range. Your wrists must be above your shoulders. Turn and engage each target with 2 rounds, reload, and engage each target with 2 additional rounds. 5 reps at Par time of 5.5 seconds (novice), 4.6 seconds (laid back), 4 Seconds (expert), 3.5 seconds (crazy)

Start standing in the box with hands in the surrender position. Engage any target with 2 rounds free style. Engage a different target with 2 rounds strong hand only. Engage the final target with 2 rounds weak hand only. 5 reps at a Par time of 4.6 seconds (novice), 4.0 seconds (laid back), 3.3 Seconds (expert), 2.8 seconds (crazy)

Start standing in the box with hands in the surrender position. From within the box engage the center targets upper A zone with two rounds. Move out of the box in any desired direction. Engage any target with 2 rounds. Execute a reload and move back into the box. From within the box engage any target with 2 rounds. Execute a reload and move out of the box in the opposite direction that you moved initially. From outside the box engage the final target with 2 rounds. (sorry, I know that is confusing). The back of the chair is facing directly up range (unlike the diagram). To use these par times, you must use 1/3rd scale targets. The distance relationship is changed if any other size is used. The targets should be spaced 2 feet apart, edge to edge.

Movement skills

Start seated in char with butt entirely on chair, facing directly downrange. Your feet must be flat on the floor with your hands on your knees. At the tone, stand and engage all the targets while moving towards the box. Execute a reload and from the box engage all three targets. 5 reps at Par time of 6.4 seconds (novice), 5.2 seconds (laid back), 4.6 Seconds (expert), 4.4 seconds (crazy) par time

Start standing outside the box with the toes of both feet touching either the left side of the box or the right side of the box. Have your hands in the surrender position. Draw and engage the center target with 2 shots to the upper A zone, then move over the box to the opposite side. Then engage all targets with 2 rounds. Please note, you do not fire and shots from inside the box, all shots are fired while outside the box. Alternate starting on the right or left side. 10 reps at Par time of 5.3 seconds (novice), 4.4 seconds (laid back), 3.8 Seconds (expert), 3.5 seconds (crazy)

Start standing behind chair with both hands touching the back of the chair. Have the chair be directly between you and the center target (do not stand off to one side or another). At the tone, draw and engage each target with 2 rounds while remaining behind the chair. Reload and then move to the box and engage the upper A zone of each target with 2 rounds from within the box. 5 reps at Par time of 7.6 seconds (novice), 6.3 seconds (laid back), 5.8 Seconds (expert), 5.5 seconds (crazy)

Start standing behind chair with both hands touching the back of the chair. Have the chair be directly between you and the center target (do not stand off to one side or another). Your gun is on the chair facing downrange. At the tone, pick up your gun and move to the box. From the box, engage the upper A zones of each target with 1 round, then reload and engage the lower A zone of each target with 2 rounds. 10 reps at Par time of 7.6 seconds (novice), 6.5 seconds (laid back), 5.8 Seconds (expert), 5.5 seconds (crazy).

Start standing in the box with hands relaxed at your sides. You must start with some part of both your feet touching a fault line. For example, both your big toes touching the front fault line, or both your heels touching the back fault line. Engage the center target with 2 rounds from within the box. Then, from outside the box, engage all the upper A zones with 2 rounds. You must move out of the box from the side opposite where you start. For example, if you start in the front, you must move out the back. Diagonal directions work as well, if you start in a corner with one foot touching each fault line, then move out of the box over the opposite corner. Be sure to alternate starting positions. 10 reps at Par time of 4.5 seconds (novice), 3.9 seconds (laid back), 3.3 Seconds (expert), 3 seconds (crazy)

Dry Fire FAQ

What is Dry Fire?

Dry fire is the practice of using an UNLOADED gun inside your home to practice your shooting skills. Usually shooters use a shot timer's “par” function to set a time that they essentially race against. The idea is to perform drills in under a certain time, and to continually work to go faster.

Is Dry Fire Safe?

As long as you don’t mix live ammo into your dry fire, it is safe. Please don’t be a dumbass. Check and double check to make sure you don’t have live ammo anywhere near your dry fire area.

Is This a Good Training Tool?

It can be hard for many people to believe that this sort of training helps. I may as well point my finger at the target and say “bang”… right? I understand that sort of skepticism, however you need to understand that virtually every single top shooter in the world used dry fire to get there. Not everyone has taken it as far as some shooters are taking it now, but the trend is certainly towards more dry fire. You are literally practicing everything but recoil control.

I Can’t Do Multiple Shots With My Gun! What am I Supposed to Do?

The solution for this problem is different for different platforms. You might need to be a little bit creative. I do have some tips for different platforms though.

With a traditional double action pistol like my Beretta, I pull the trigger and the gun self cocks (just like it would live fire). After that, I let the trigger come forward, but not enough to let it reset the double action mechanism. This mimics single action mode.

If you are using a Glock, you can use a piece of cardboard to keep the gun very slightly out of battery. This will keep the trigger from remaining motionless after the first “shot”. Check out the below picture.

It's a very good program that focuses heavily on gunhandling skills. However, if you're honest with yourself and remain diligent on your front sight focus it will also improve your shot calling and accuracy skills.

FWIW, the guy who created that program made USPSA GM as his first classification only 5000 rounds after picking up a pistol for the first time. In 2011 he won the Production division national championship. He has some very novel training techniques that are unlike anything anyone does when it comes to pistol shooting, including forcing yourself to go at insane speed on incredibly difficult targets at long distances - and being ok with missing.

*Shadow work with firearms

Are all of great importance and make a HUGE impact on the overall skill development. THANKS FOR EVEN MENTIONING IT!!!

BUT, just like with the "guitar drill exercises I've been teaching people for 20+ years "NOBODY WILL DO THEM".

Most firearms types like tp TALK and SHOOT. (Mostly talk). They DO NOT want to train/drill/practice etc.

I'm not being a judgemental asshole. I'm just sharing my experience from being a firearms instructure for over 10 years. YES, that is one whole decade!

I taught the use of the Glock Safe Action Pistol and the Reminton 870 Shotgun for about 10+ years... My framework was for urban, domestic environments and concealed carry.

I haven't done that sort of work for over 3 years.

What are you talking about? Maybe the tactical timmies don't dryfire, but every serious shooter I know does dryfire practice almost every single day. Phone Post

I think Demi is referring to the average gun owner. Unfortunately, the competition shooters and serious shooters are in a minority of gun owners, a large portion of regular gun owners don't dry fire, or even really train. It's not just private citizens either. Even been to a shooting range with LEO's? Some can shoot quite well, others are scary bad.

Heck, I had an argument with a police officer about dry firing (he thought it was bad and would hurt his gun). He'd carried a glock as a duty weapon for almost 10 years and refused to dry fire it. I asked him how he took it apart to clean it without dry firing it. Turns out he hadn't even stripped the gun before. Here's someone who carries a gun as part of his job to save lives and he didn't even have enough familiarity with it to field strip and clean it!

Takes all kinds I guess.

i used one similar to these for about a month, and noticed my trigger pull improved a lot. i wish i didn't have to turn it back in, but my dept's got some shooters that need a lot of help to qual, just not shoot better.

it was nice to use, because i didn't have to rack the slide all the time to dry fire, and could fire more than 1 rd from the holster.

obviously the price sucks.

I know there's a company that makes a drop in kit for your glock to reset it without pulling the slide. Honestly, most of the time I just pressed the trigger, then pressed it again with it back. The trigger doesn't move, but that's not really what you're training yourself to do. You're trying to get your trigger finger used to moving without the rest of your hand moving.

that, or get a revolver and dry fire that. A heavier trigger builds up more strength in your trigger finger which seems to make trigger control easier. Seems to work well for me and my students, just make sure you do dry fire with your normal carry gun to get used to the trigger on it if it's not a revolver. YMMV.

i checked those kits out, and some are about $35, but still require one to change out the trigger assembly every time you use it. i'm way too lazy for that, and will prolly just keep doing like i have been, and just racking the slide

on a side note, i went shooting with some buddies the other day, and was very impressed with the trigger pull/ease of use of the Springfield XD pistol series....very smmooth with a consistent break. felt like a dream compared to a Glock's goofy trigger pull...

If I were to get one of the dry fire kits, I'd probably put it in a training gun that had a blade tech barrel in it and rarely, if ever, change it out honestly.

Only ever saw one downside of resetting by pulling the slide back. If I hadn't seen it with my own eyes, I wouldn't have believed it. A sheriff deputy had spent some time dry firing to try to qualify. During the qualification, he drew, fired, racked his slide, fired again, racked..... rinse and repeat. He actually ejected like 5 live rounds while he was qualifying.

The XD's triggers do feel a lot different, but the reset is crazy long compared to the glocks. Just a personal pref. Wanna feel nice, try a slicked up 1911 trigger. It's almost like the gun responds to your mental command instead of your trigger finger.

Reset doesn't effect accuracy or speed, so it's not something you should take too seriously. If you like the XD trigger and can hit well with it, then by all means go for it.

Which is why is said it's a personal preference.

However, using the trigger reset is slightly faster.
