I am going in for my dog's checkup next week. While his health is very important to me, I also would like to save some $ if this doesn't compromise that.

anyone use an over the counter flea and tic prevention, or do those suck?

I work at a vet clinic and use it only seasonally but with that said check to see if you live in an area that heartworm is a risk and keep your pets on prevention if so.
