In the main event of UFC on FUEL TV 4, Chris Weidman dropped Mark Munoz, and started to Ground n Pound.

He didn't stop for a while.

Fans faulted referee Josh Rosenthal for not stopping the bout sooner, and Rosenthal agrees.

"I came home and I watched it, and I was kind of like you know, if I was sitting here, watching this on the couch, I probably would have been talking smack about myself," admitted Rosenthal. "I always say accountability is a huge part of the sport, and you are accountable for your actions.

"I feel like I was just a little slow on the trigger. I don't want to see guys take unnecessary punishment. It's a rough sport. Everyone knows what they sign in for, but it's a millisecond-basis game. You're making choices right there on the spot, and in the heat of the moment, I felt like I was seeing some stuff.

"In hindsight, I have to step my game up and make sure I'm on point for the next guys."

Big fan of Rosenthal & appreciate anybody who is able to reflect objectionably on their performance. Watching fights, it seems like MMA refs should be better at stopping fights. I don't know what happens in there for there to be so many instances of refs just zoned out staring at a guy getting his unconscious head knocked around. Must be a lot harder than it looks.

Refreshing to see a ref step up and admit they could've done better.

Josh is a great ref, and is apparently a classy guy too. Phone Post

Very classy for him to admit the wrong.  Still, after the Bigfoot fight and this last one, he has to know that this could turn into a problem if not addressed.

A late stop in an important main event fight is waaaaaaay better than an early stop. He was there looking at MM's eyes. He probably thought there was a chance for Mark to recover. Plenty of fights have been saved by refs not stopping it early.

These guys (I'm not counting Winslow) are human. Mistakes will get made.

He normally does an awesome job, and I think he did outstanding in the Lesnar/Carwin fight last summer. So for him to admit he messed up a fight, I'm okay with that. As if my opinion matters. Phone Post

Great to see him say this. I was quick to blame Rosenthal and slate him for his mistake, but I've had a little time to think about it now.

Yes, it was really bad to watch and it was a pretty huge mistake. But everyone makes mistakes, Rosenthal is also responsible for Shogun vs Hendo going all 5 rounds and Lesnar subbing Carwin.

Rosenthal is still the best ref in MMA. Phone Post

I felt like he handled Cain vs. Bigfoot relatively well. He stopped the fight to let the ringside physician check the cut. Not sure why the ringside physician let that one continue but that's not the ref's call. Rosenthal could have called the eventual TKO a little sooner at the end but I don't think it was a terribly late stoppage.

The Munoz stoppage was terribly late, and it's good to see Rosenthal acknowledge his mistake.

Josh is easily my favorite ref. Without josh, shogun vs Hendo would've just been an entertaining fight with Dan getting a 2nd rd tko. Phone Post

No 3rd rd.

He took a HUGE risk! Many unanswered shots where given. Make no mistake, Hendo delivered a TON of damage, and that savage can kill a bitch!

I would think fighters would much rather have a ref who may stop it late, opposed to a ref who may stop it early. If i were a fighter, i would want the benefit of the doubt, especially with how much these guys have on the line. Phone Post

Yep. Glad to see he is taking ownership. That's all we ask for, no one is perfect. Admitting things is how people improve. Not like Keith Kizer and being ignornat to what is happening.

I am sure Josh will use this to further hone his skills. I think he is one of the best - right up there with Dean and BJM.

Being a ref is the most cut-throat position in mma, you make a decision that affects somebodies career and millions of people watching you around the world will hold you accountable for said fighter losing or taking too much punishment, the line between a good stoppage and a late/early one in mma is so fine.
we emphasize fighter safety in mma but where there are no formalities like standing counts etc and the action is so fast paced mistakes will be made.
All in all, i think it takes a lot to step back and be critical of yourself, especially when someones health was at stake, he could have tried to defend his call but he didnt, fair play to him, respect the rosenthal! Phone Post

Maybe 1 second too slow, but really not far off. Certainly not enough for anyone to have legitimate beef with.

Couple that with the fact Munoz IS A TOUGH MOTHERFUCKER and stopping it early with a guy like that would be even worse.
