Today, in an e-mail to mixedmartialarts.com, the President of the Voluntary Anti-Doping Association, Margaret Goodman, announced that Rory MacDonald has indeed signed up for their program leading up to his UFC 152 bout with BJ Penn:

This letter is to advise the Mixed Martial Arts LLC that Rory MacDonald is a participant in the Voluntary Anti-Doping Association (VADA) program. He is subject to randomly-selected testing for performance enhancing drugs and methods through September 22, 2012.

We will keep the MMA LLC apprised of test results. Do not hesitate to contact me or VADA’s Chief Legal Counsel, Ryan Connolly, if you have questions or concerns.

This will be the first time UFC athletes have subjected themselves to a regimented program of anti-doping testing. It was BJ Penn who called for this action in an effort to help clean up the sport and MacDonald was happy to oblige.

horrible for the sport...   olympic athletes are still cheating...  it just became more expensive to do so.  The only people who benefit from this are the chemists who charge more to beat the tests and those administering the tests (vada, etc...)

You bring this into mma and you only make it less fair because only the top tier in the payscale will be able to afford ped use giving them an even bigger advantage.

With BJ's hypocrisy and ulterior motive in all of this, Rory should've stipulated that BJ pay for the testing, make him put his money where his mouth is.

Let's be clear here - BJ called for this action because he thinks Tri-Star is a dirty gym and he wants to bust them. This has nothing to do with the state of the sport at large.

Sal Penis - I have a feeling Tri-Star has a juice bar. Look at GSP and his gyno. Rory with his Bacne etc,.
Rory had acne everywhere. Hes a young 20-something. Lots of people his age have acne problems. Phone Post

I'm not saying their clean. I'm just saying that BJs motivation is clearly NOT "hey, everyone, let's clean up the sport!", it's "I don't like these particular guys, so I want to try to bust these particular guys as juicing".

Which is shitty. This whole fight is about BJs ego and his beef with Tri-Star. Let's not forget that this was all BJs idea - BJ told UFC he wanted to fight Rory (http://www.mmamania.com/2012/6/25/3117027/rory-macdonald-ufc-152-bj-penn-retirement-return-canada-mma).

"Rory calls out BJ" is just the promotional storyline.

Sad but true. Doping is always ahead of testing. Did anyone dealing with Balco actually test positive?

It's a positive development for the fight, and the sport of MMA. No professional sport will ever be 100% clean, but that should always be the goal. Phone Post

THIS. Seriously Rory should have made BJ sign a contract that he wouldn't make excuses or accusations after he loses.

I believe VADA is paying. And, BJ has every right to ask for real testing.

Hopefully Overoid's next opponent does the same thing.

First of all, it's sponsored.

Second of all, it's voluntary.  Rory doesn't have to enroll if he doesn't want to.

So I've read, but that was before BJ first backed out of the testing. Did the sponsorship still stand afterwards?

There IS no connection. Not unless (until?) UFC itself embraces and requires VADA testing.

Right now, VADA is simply a convenient tool to help BJ grind his axe. Nothing more.

I don't see why they would stop sponsoring it, but BJ was offering to pay for it out of his own pocket anyways with another organzation if VADA didn't work out.
