Joe Lauzon reflects on setting fight night bonus record, going for the finish and being called a 'tough guy'
Elias Cepeda for Yahoo! Sports

With his fight night bonuses, Lauzon walked away from Saturday's fight with a nice chunk of change in his pocket. "I probably made about $150,000 this weekend," Lauzon details. "I made forty-something in show-and-win money and then I got $100,000 in bonuses."

The computer science degree holder and avid video gamer says he knows what he'll spend his money on: "I'm buying lots of X-Boxes," he laughs.

Just interviewed the UG's own Joe Lauzon to talk about setting the fight night bonus award record, going for the finish, spending/investing his money and why he never wants to be called a "tough guy."

Hope you guys enjoy the piece, thanks to Joe for the time!

I'm dissapointed that he didn't take my suggestion to purchase a Segway and use that to come out to the cage in true hardcore nerd fashion.

Did the bonus money go down to $50,000 from $60,000 or $75,000? Also, was Joe only getting $20,000 for the fight, which would equate to $40,000 for show and win? I think he has proven his worth and hopefully will see the next echelon of the pay structure for his upcoming fights. This guy never disappoints. Still a handsome haul, but with two fight night bonuses I would have thought Joe would be pocketing somewhere around $250,000 on the night in total.

Joe has stated in interviews before that he intentionally works a lower end contract which gives him the option to not have to fight the elite with every single fight he has.  He said in the interview he knows that if he was making $40K to show and another $40 to win every fight he has would be against guys like Cerrone, Pettis, Maynard etc.

^ Even still, it seems to me the top guys in a division should get more than 40K to show.

Honestly, it's not a bad way to look at it. All too often, you see guys make a title run, fail, and then the UFC doesn't know what the fuck to do with them, they pick up a couple of losses against top contenders and then they're gone.

Joe is describing the Chris Lytle school of thought. He's a bonus hunter. Take the fights on the big stage against journeymen/gatekeepers, take a fight of the night/sub of the night bonus, cash in, come back out and do it again. There is always a market for that kind of fighter, and they are often the fan favorite. And without the "win at all costs to advance and keep job" pressure, they can focus on just fighting their best, which usually results in a great show.

Makes sense to me.

I know for a fact that Joe has told me multiple times in interviews over the last six years that he's going for the belt and his opponents reflect that. When he beat Melvin, that was to move up in the rankings big time and then he took on Pettis next, which would have put him, at worst, within throwing distance of a title shot.

This isn't mentioning the fact that his first UFC fight was against the former world champ as well as other fights like with Kenny Florian at a time when that fight had title shot ladder implications.

Glad to see somebody being really smart with their money. To me that's awesome, the freedom of being debt-free.

If I was him though I'd definitely get rid of the student loans first and then put the rest down on the mortgage. Not really sure how it works in the States (guess it depends on the mortgage and who it's through) but normally you can't judge drop something like $50,000 right onto a mortgage. You need to do it through anniversary payments, double payments, etc. And if he's going to hold onto his money in order to do that it would be more beneficial for him to put down money on things he can pay down right away like his student loans. But, whatever! :P
