I broke down and pre-purchased. The more video on YouTube I watched, the better it looked. I'm a diehard WoW fanatic and I'm hoping this game does well. Phone Post

I played the beta but really couldn't sink my teeth into it because of the performance issues. I did enjoy what I played enough to purchase it.

So now 3 days in here are my thoughts:

Pros:

- Combat: Combat in GW2 is just fun. It's not like most MMOs where you just stand there and wait for your cool downs. This game takes skill and a bit of luck honestly. There are still cooldowns to your abilities, but every class has an auto attack, so you're always doing damage. Moving out of the way of attacks and timing your special abilities just right is what separates the good players from the bad ones. So far I have a level 15 warrior, 12 ranger, and a few other lower level toons, and I haven't been bored yet (which is more than I can say for the same span of time in SWTOR).

- Weapons: Every class has access to a variety of weapons, and what weapons you equip and how you equip them determines what abilities you have at your disposal. This is a unique way to keep the game interesting at the lower levels. The abilities are varied, not just carbon copies of each other, so every weapon you pick up, and how you choose to equip it can change your play style entirely.

- World Events/World Quests: The world events vary from taking down a massive boss, to keeping back invading hordes, to escort missions. This is the primary way you have of leveling and so far, every event I've been in has been challenging and fun. The big boss fights give some really nice rewards too, and the more you contribute, be it by damaging the boss, healing allies, or reviving allies, the better the rewards you get, so there's really incentive to do well and not just ride everyone's coat tails.

- Gathering professions: There is no fighting for nodes like in other MMOs. If you see a mining node, you can mine it even after 50 other people have. The nodes are unique to the individual. Crafting in general is par for the course however (similar to WoW), so don't expect anything different on that end.

- Story: The character stories are actually interesting and feature terrific voice acting. There are some events where you have to make a choice and that choice changes the path your character takes. I actually found the stories more enjoyable than SWTOR (which I felt was the only good bits of that game).

- Pace of leveling: This could be either a pro or a con depending on how you look at it. In WoW and Rift and every other MMO, the higher you get, the longer it takes to get to that next level. 79-80 is akin to 1-40 in WoW for example. In GW2, the pace of leveling is even keel. It takes the same amount of XP to go from level 1-2 as it does to go from level 59-60. The good part about this is that you don't get that little sinking feeling when you ding knowing you have such a long ways to go for that next level. The bad part is that leveling feels SLOW in the early levels compared to other MMOs.

- World PVP: The PVP is GW2 is a lot of fun. There are still balancing issues for sure (ranged always seem to have the advantage), but it's a lot of fun, especially sieges. The combat is fast and fluid and though 1 on 1 needs balancing, the game seems to have achieved a very nice group balancing. Every class has the ability to heal themselves just enough to make fights interesting but not enough to be seem invincible. The big damage attacks take unique timing and skill to pull off and the game isn't as gear dependent as other MMOs. The most skilled player, not the best dressed, always wins the fight (unless he's outnumbered).

- Graphics/Environments: To say GW2 is a gorgeous game is a massive understatement. I thought Terra was beautiful (and it is), but GW2 is just as beautiful if not moreso. There is some amazing artistic design in this game. I have never seen so many varied and beautiful environments in ANY game I've played. Not WoW, not KOTOR, not Terra, never. To go out exploring in this game, while risky, is a real treat.

Cons:

- Questing: GW2 doesn't have traditional questing. The closest thing you'll get to traditional questing is your player story, and it never involves gathering X amount of anything. You will be fighting and you will be dying.. a lot. We have been spoiled by games like WoW and Rift on this end in that you don't get a nice linear path to end-game here. The way the player story works is you get a quest that requires you to be level 3 for example. When you finish that part of the quest line, you might be level 4 or 3.5, but the next part of your story requires you to be level 8. So once you finish that quest line, you're on your own in regards to leveling, until you reach level 8. There is no "do this quest hub then move on to the next level-appropriate hub". Forget about all that. You can do a world events, or grind, and that's why this is in the cons section. Often times I find myself having to grind or do gathering while I wait for the next event to pop-up. It hasn't been bad so far, but I fear it could get worst later on.

- Number of attack abilities: As I mentioned before, the attacks you unlock depend mostly on the weapons you are using and your ability to train those weapon up. The bad thing is that you can train those weapon up very, very fast. By the time I was level 10 I had unlocked all the attacks for every single weapon I was capable of wielding. You can still unlock skills, but they are mostly complimentary to your attacks, not new attacks themselves (think of the skills like talents in WoW). On the positive note, unlike many abilities in WoW, every single attack and ability you unlock serves a purpose and WILL be used. There are no "filler" abilities, everything is useful.

- Difficulty: As I mentioned, your character missions typically require you to be a certain level to do them. What I've learned is that the higher you go up, the more difficult those player missions get to be, to the point where some are downright impossible to do at the recommended level. Frustratingly, difficult. They cross the line between challenging and stupid. So keep that in mind, just because the mission says you should be level 11 to do it doesn't mean you will be able to. You can take a party member with you on the mission however but if you don't have one available, you better level up a couple more levels before you try it. Which leads me to...

- Zoning: GW2 has some kind of a zoning system that makes it challenging to play with your friends. You may be on the same servers, in the same area, but you may not see each other. You can invite a friend into your party an then "join them" in their version of whatever land you are in. But the joining is not immediate due to some queue system they have so sometimes you have to wait a while before you are able to join your friends, even though, as I said you are in the same server, in the same exact location in the game world. I hope they fix this soon because if not, getting a raid together later on could be an exercise in frustration and could be this game's downfall once people start to reach end-game.

- No mounts: GW2 features a teleportation system that allows the players to travel quickly by teleporting to a variety of waypoints throughout the maps, so mounts aren't missed too much, but still, I for one would rather have them.

Conclusion:

Overall, I am really enjoying the game right now, mostly due to the combat, story, and varied and gorgeous environments. The players on my server also seem to be very mature and helpful so that's a huge plus, but I don't know if it's like that on all servers. It's too early to tell what kind of staying power this game is going to have in the long run, but considering it has no monthly fee, I would definitely say, without a shadow of a doubt, that it's worth the $50 asking price. It's better than Dragon Age, or Skyrim, or any other single-player MMO you would pay $50 for IMO.

Ty for the review granpa. I'm at 60% dl which seems pretty fast for a 16gb dl. I've only played ff14 mmo before and parts of your review remind of it. One of my favorite things was running around the world looking at the gorgeous environments. Hopefully this game holds me over untill ff14 version 2.0 comes out. Gotta love the f2p of guild wars tho. What class should I pick? Phone Post

I like that there is no end game. The entire game is the end game. No raids. Level 80 player has the same loot and abilities as a level 1 player in the PvP battlegrounds. Open World vs World PvP everyone is boosted to 80. Besides the 5 mans, pretty much everything you can do at 80, you can do at level 5+. A nice change from the standard MMO fare.

I didn't even look into the game before I bought it on a whim on Friday. Very unique take on an MMO. Storyline quests are well done too.

Only level 10 so hard to say how long I will play it, but so far so good.

I rolled a warrior too. What perks are you guys taking with your skill points? So far I took the healing signal that regenerates your health passively and heals when active and the buffs (crit, toughness). Thought about taking kick for PvP too.

Also, at level 11 I unlocked the trait lines (i think thats the name), but I can't put any points in them. Says something about an adept trainer? Anyone know where I go for that?

Warrior is fun. Cool how you can use so many different weapon combos. Right now I am using 1h mace and shield and a longbow for ranged when i swap.

Thanks for the info Jockey. Please post the build if you don't mind. I have been using dual axes and a rifle in the battlegrounds. Haven't put much thought into my spec though so any help is appreciated! :)

You have to go to the warrior trainer right outside any of the home cities and buy the adept book. It costs 10 silver.

By the way the great sword abilities are awesome for a Warrior if you have not tried them already. Just massive damage to any 3 targets in front of you, and that bird skill that applies a dot is underrated. Use it as soon as you attack someone and combined with your attacks, they have very little chance for survival if they don't heal themselves quickly.

Also, did you guys discover the fountain thing in the portal city that allows you to take 4 items, be it weapons or gear, that you don't want/use and essentially trade them in for one random item that's better than the 4 items used? The only catch is that the item you get back is random so it might not be something you can even use. So far I've gotten a really nice war horn with nice stats and a few nice staffs I can't use on my main but gave to my alts.

Thanks Granpa. I think I remember seeing that guy now.

I haven't got a greatsword yet. Look forward to trying one out. I was big into the 1h axe and warhorn for the charge the warhorn gives, but went shield for a bit for the survival and shield stun.

Havent seen the fountain thing yet. Will take a look.

btw. what is in those black chests that you need a key to unlock?

Went back to 1h axe and shield. The shield slam is a great stun, especially for PvP i find.

Prefer the rifle over the longbow now too. Way more direct DPS then the longbow, which is more AoE.

Jockey - I had a warrior bleed my engineer to death from a ledge with nothing but a rifle, I guess his build was to stack bleeds, it was like 8k in bleed damage.

I'm willing to bet he had that skill that summons a bird to apply a dot. It's highly underrated and vicious.

Jockey - ^^ what is this bird skill lol never heard of it, sounds insane

It's one of the skills you buy with skill points. You summon a bird to attack your foe, and the bird applies a bleed that does pretty good damage combined with your other attacks.

The more I play this game the more I'm loving it. The only beef I have with it so far is that everyone is going ranged for PVP sieges because it works so much better. They need to find a way to make melee more useful in those situations. Also, on the same theme, the boss fights need to be more melee friendly as well. I understand they implemented a dodge mechanic but in the heat of battle when there are a gazillion spell effects and dust and all that going on, sometimes it's impossible to see something coming at you if you're in melee range and then it's insta-death.

Other than that, the game is just fantastic. Up to level 22 so far and I don't have that MMO fatigue. I'm never having to gather shit, or return shit to anyone, or serve as someone's errand boy. I kill, and then I kill some more, and then I kill some more and I'm having a blast doing it.

IMO, this game just destroyed the MMO genre. I can't imagine anyone playing this and then going back to the tedium of WoW or SWTOR or Rift or any other MMO.
