I hear it grueling. Eat good, sleep alot, stay out of trouble and do as you are told. Wrestling coaches are notorious for being hardasses so try to get on coaches good side. Good luck man. Just give it your all and you'll do great Phone Post

Give it all you've got. Don't drink and smoke. Train hard, have fun. When things don't go your way, let it fuel you to train harder. Stay positive.

Have fun, stay focused and listen to your coaches advice.

Two most important things when starting wrestling:

Set your Goals, know what you want to accomplish.
Be a student of the sport, watch as many videos on wrestling as you can.

Come in to practice before everyone and stay until everyone's left. Do 15 minutes of extra work everyday. Wrestle the best kids on the team regardless if they are bigger than you. Write down everything you eat. Write down everything you learn during practice. Don't talk during practice. Phone Post

-work hard and learn from better wrestlers.
-Wrestlers can be assholes to freshman or to the new guys. But keep at it and dont quit and they eventually respect you.
-prepare for pain. It's gonna suck for a while.
-don't quit. Phone Post

If possible, get a video recording of practices, and competition. I found it to be the best way to learn where your strengths and weaknesses are. Phone Post

High protein low carb diet. Wind sprints and stair sprints for endurance and explosiveness. Find a weight your comfortable at, don't kill yourself (that'll come later as you mature). And as previously mentioned, pullups, pushups etc. Work your abs and neck constantly. Lots of mat drills and sprawls. And lots of hard combative wrestling.

Remember why your doing it. If your goal is to be a state champ by the end of four years, your going to have to really work and work hard at it. I wont lie and candy coat things youll have to bust your ass and youll be soar porbably 90% of the next four years. Even when your first season is over keep working out and trying to find open mats in your area or open tournaments you can go to. Also with the poularity of MMA these days alot of MMA gyms will have a night each week dedicated just to wrestling practice, if you can find two or three local gyms and they have practice on different nights theres three extra nights of practive every week.Keep your focus and listen to your coachs and teammates. Remember you do what you think feel and seems right, they can see if it is right without any bias. Wrestle hard at practice, thats the secret of every great wrestler, they are INTENSE in the practice room. Keep your head up, take the lumps bruises and losses and learn from them, and welcome to the greatest sport on earth.

Go to every practice, learn the sport, live a life that fosters improvement, and don't get discouraged. You will have to pay your dues by getting your ass kicked like most of us mortals had to do prior to attaining success.

Don't cut too much weight.  When I was in H.S. their were guys getting doctors waivers so they could cut under 5 percent bodyfat.  Cael Sanderson and Kurt Angle cut little weight on the olympic level and look at how they did.

Find a a takedown that suits you best and work to master it, same thing for pinners.  Don't try to learn overly complex moves in the beginning.  Focus on a few things at first and work on them over and over.

A solid double leg and a good half  can get a wrestler far in HS.
