Ever since Bisping won season three of The Ultimate Fighter (TUF), he's been painstakingly matched to build a credible case for a title shot. After dropping down to 185 pounds when it became apparent that light heavyweight was clearly not his proper division, the branding and rebuilding of Bisping has been a long process, one interrupted brutally by Dan Henderson and in little more than decision-loss hiccups to Wanderlei Silva and Chael Sonnen.

Bisping may indeed get the next title shot against Anderson Silva, and it may be one of the longer-odds challenges in recent memory. Stylistically, he has all the wrong tools that you'd want to deal with Silva.

He lacks world-class wrestling -- though his takedown defense is pretty solid and his takedowns have evolved from mediocre to decent -- and he relies on a points-based, busy striking style with modest-at-best power. Both of those tendencies are likely to backfire terribly against Silva, but the champ has pretty much cleaned out the division.

The curious case of Chris Weidman being given Tim Boetsch at UFC 154 instead of a shot at Silva pretty much makes the case for the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) in bold print -- it's determined to milk every bit of promotional mojo out of Bisping they can and get him a title shot. Bisping has always carried extra promotional heft because of his U.K. fan base and the recognition he's built for himself as a TUF winner.

He's been around long enough, has some good wins, and has great marketability. Fuck it, make the fight. Phone Post

Stephen Holder - Bisbing is the text book definition of a smoke and mirrors fighter. This dude stays fighting guys at the bottom 20 middleweights and barely can pull off the decision. lmfao@ the idea this guy in any dimesion of reality has anything at all for Silva.

Bottom 20 middleweights??? This is the kind of ridiculous post I see a lot of on this site. Bisping love him or hate him is an excellent fighter who IMO won against Sonnen, who just got a title shot. Bisping has been in the UFC fighting for 6 years against tough opponents. I think he deserves a title shot.

So what you're saying is the fact that you think he beat a guy he was actually deemed to have lost to is a major reason he deserves a title shot?

No. Maybe if they do Vitor/Bisping next and he beats Vitor, then I'd change my mind.

I say give it to him. Bisping has been around for quite a while and has been begging for a title shot for a long time. As many people as Anderson has defended the title against I think it is time to give Bisping his shot. Should do solid PPV numbers. Either Bisping will win and shock the world, or Bisping will get beat and stop calling for a title shot. The guy has paid his dues...give it to him.

Noone at 185 can make a stronger claim to the #1 contender slot, save perhaps Weidman.  Let's say a decision must be made between the two of them.

Weidman looks like he could actually win, and has been breezing through competition and has 1 top ten win.  However he isn't much of a name just yet.

Bisping just lost a tough fight with the consensus #2 in the division which many think he won, and just won a fight against a top 10 opponent.  He is seen as having less of a chance, but he has a name and is very marketable, which brings more money to the UFC, and the fighters.

A fight with Bisping is a money maker and gives the UFC hype machine some time to pump up Weidman so that fight can also be a financial success.  Bisping is also the easier fight for Silva, one of the UFC's big draws.  This gives the UFC a higher likelihood of two high profile title fights with Silva.  If Weidman gets a shot first and wins, then what.  Weidman-Bisping for the title?  That fight would be interesting, but not a money maker.  And forget about having them fight each other for the title shot.  Why have fresh contenders knock each other off when the champ needs some new match ups?

The correct answer is Bisping first, Wide-Man second.

Weidman vs Bisping for a shot at Silva in early 2013.

Bisping definitely deserves a title shot at this point. Let the man have his title shot. A fight with Weidman would also be ok for #1 contender, but Bisping's time is here and Weidman is still young.

He deserves it as much as people think weidman does, maybe with the win over stann maybe a bit more.

Silva probably smashes him, but who knows.

He earned it just as much, arguably more than the last 6 challengers, Chael's second shot excluded. Phone Post

Anderson Silva needs the opponents.

Let Bisping fight him in early 2013.
Then Weidman can fight him in late 2013.

After he destroys both of them the UG can pick the next person he is ducking.
