NCAA Div I wrestler-turned-UFC lightweight Jacob Volkmann takes on Shane Roller this Friday night at UFC on FX 5 in front of a hometown crowd at the Target Center in Minneapolis, MN. The two were originally set to meet at UFC 151, but when Jones turned down a short-notice fight against replacement Chael Sonnen, the entire event was cancelled and Volkmann vs. Roller was moved back a month later.

With Volkmann coming into the fight on the heels of a first-round submission loss to Paul Sass, and with Roller having lost three of his last four, this very well could be a must-win fight for both fighters to remain in the UFC.

“It is a must win,” Volkmann told theScore.com. “I don’t know about getting cut, but because I have bills to pay.”

“I’ve been in the hospital with my son and it’s going to be a large expense,” the 32-year old said. “He had a bout with asthma and we had to take him into the E.R. to spend the night.”

Volkmann said that the cancelled event cost him a lot of money, and as the father of three children who went back to school this past month, not getting his show money when he thought he was going to get it has hurt him financially.

“I still plan on pickpocketing Jon Jones and taking the money I lost on my fight,” Volkmann said.

“The irritating part is that I spent money on plane tickets. I bought two corner’s plane tickets, and now I have to do another month of training for this fight."

“I don’t know if I’d call it an extended training camp,” he said of the extra month. “It’s more like two training camps put together. I had to gain my weight back because I was pretty close to weight just before September.”

“It better be exciting. I think it’s going to be exciting,” he said of the fight with Roller. “I don’t understand why people say my fights are boring. It’s just a different style. People don’t understand the technical style and then other people don’t like my fights and write on the Internet and it really frustrates me. People that understand fighting, that understand there’s technique behind what I’m doing, they’re the ones who think the fights are exciting.

“You know there’s some fat turds out there having his heyday because he has a forum and wants to write some bad stuff about me, but he doesn’t understand the sport. I really don’t care about those guys.”

“The goal is to get on top of Roller and try to control him from the top position. I’ve got the d’arce choke, armbars, kimuras, and plenty of submissions. Obviously there’s pressure (to finish) because there’s the post-fight bonuses they give out, so it’d be nice to get a little bonus.”

“Well, anything’s possible,” he said of a knockout. “Um… I feel comfortable on my feet so yeah it’s possible that I knock him out.

“The goal is not to stay standing but we’ll see what happens. The goal is to stay on the ground, try to frustrate him, and try to get him on the defense. His endurance, I’m assuming just from watching him in the past, is not the greatest, so I’m gonna try and wear him out.”

You should never fight fat turds. They can stretch your butthole out.

Coincidentally it seems as though something large is stuck in Jacob's butt.

i love when people say they dont care about certain people, but still feel the need to try and insult them. it shows they got under your skin and you do care. he is a very good grappler and i respect his skills, much like i respect Fitch and his skills. but i see why a lot of people complain about their fights. they pay the money to watch= they have the right to complain.

I actually like Volkmann's fights. His grappling is not all control based, he passes, he goes for subs etc. He doesn't strike much because he's not that great at it but his ground game is pretty savvy. Phone Post

If every fighter was emplyed Volmanns style there wouldnt be a venue for him to "fight" in. Yea I'm a little overweight, havent had a fight since high school and even then, they could hardly be considered real fights. That said, I pay money to watch these events. yea I could go to a bar, get friends to pitch in, etc but it still all comes back to exciting vs boring. If a card is full of jacob volkmanns, does anyone think I'd have an easy time convincing friends to come over and pitch in a few bucks to watch 3 hours of a hugging competition? Does anyone think bars would continue to buy these events and expect customers to come in to watch them? Fuck no.

Just because I dont trane full time and have any fights doesnt mean I cant sit here and give my opinion. If I'm allowed to sit here and talk about how great I think AS or GSP or JBJ is then I can sure as hell say I think Volkmann is boring and have no interest in seeing him fight.

For every fat ignorant turd on the internet that doesn't like Volkmann, there is a intelligent, in-shape, well versed mma fan that doesn't like him just as much. He's an awkward unfunny lay and pray specialist. Imho

I'm a butthurt fat turd.

On a serious note, being seen as a boring fighter is probably the worst thing that can happen to your marketability. Ask Fitch and Askren. Phone Post

QFT

Maybe instead of relying on others to generate wealth and income to pay for his medical expenses, he could start his own promotion and put on fights or do something else productive. Phone Post

You don't knock your audience.

You knock the guys who don't watch you.

Those guys suck.

But you don't ever knock the guys who bought a ticket.

Because you can't replace the audience as much as you think you can so you'd best keep the one you've got.

This goes for Dana, fighters, anyone who earns a living entertaining.

Be glad you have an audience and treat them like gold.

They are cool because they are cool enough to be YOUR audience.

Don't treat them like they would be better off elsewhere.

Whether they be fat turds or skinny piss ants. Phone Post

Volkmann needs to study the art of knowing when to stop talking from what I've seen. This is a mild example, but if he had ended pointing out he dose seek submissions here he would have came off better. Phone Post

Does Volkmann ever have something positive to say?  He maligned Lombard, he stated he disliked Escudero (who never said a thing about him) and he dislikes his audience.  .

Fun Fact :Of his last 8 fights, the only finishes happened when "he" was finished.  So, what bonuses is he speaking of?

Has anyone ever looked forward to one of his fights? Has anyone ever seen a Volkmann interview and thought to themself "Oh boy, I can't wait to see what Jacob Volkmann has to say! I am certain that it will be scathing and witty!"

You know when someone's making an excuse for dryhumping? When they try to act like it's some high technical form. I hate it when people act like anytime a fighter is focused on control it's somehow "technical" but if someone is exciting and finishes it's "just bleed" fighting.

Here's a fact: You know what requires more technique than the limited skillset of controlling someone to a decision? Actually finishing the fight with some solid striking technique or submissions. Those are higher, and more fight-specific, skills than trying to grind it out on points. If Volkmann is such a technical fighter he wouldn't be going to decision after decision without really even threatening his opponent.

I really hope Roller beats him. Can't wait to hear his negative comments if he gets cut.
