knuckleballs - I saw this happen in the All-Valley karate tournament in '84. This wprking-class kid still got up from it and took out an entire dojo in his first tournament.

It was a sight to see.

clown.

Knee KO at 0.41

In case someone wonders, the reason I started this thread was not just for the fun of it. It was because some clueless moron tried to tell me karate does not have kicks with knees (or kick with the shin, but that is for another thread) saying only thaiboxing had it.

The knees start landing at around the 5 minute mark

Bonus point for Francisco Filho knocking Andy Hug out cold at 3.16.

I was going to ask you for the spinning heel kick from 2:44 that is my favorite knockout ever.

That is Jean Riviere (Can) vs Tatsuya Isawaki (Jpn). Im not really focusing on other than knees in this thread.so see it as a bonus.

no idea what style this is (there are so many kyokushin splinters, offshots and influenced styles), but it is knockdown rules they fight under

They were allowing '1 second grabs' here for a while in kyokushin - which led to a lot of knee knock-outs.

I was at the 5th world tournament with a large group from Canada to watch. We sat second row from the mat, it was incredible.

Glove karate. This is basically modified kyokushin rules (which is exactly what it is) but with boxing gloves and headpunches.

Not very common outside of Japan, inside of Japan it is a fast growing karate ruleset. This is from the "shinkarate" organization, which works both as its own formal karate style and as a tournament federation for lots of small styles (or for members of larger organizations wishing to try the glove karate rules).

This btw. is Masaaki Noiri fighting. Known from k-1 MAX and krush. He practice kyokushin as style, but started out competing in shinkarate instead of knockdown, and is now a pro kickboxer.

several offshot groups still allow the 1 sec grab. Ashihara, shidokan, seidokaikan (I think), world oyama, enshin and many other. It does not really dramatically increse the number of knee KO´s compared to the no holding knee ko´s, just an increase in the break/restarts when people hold on longer than the allowed time.

Still. many in kyokushin (me included) would love to see it allowed again.

My shihan told us years ago that they got rid of the 1 second grab because a huge guy from south Africa was nearly killing people with knees. He said the guy was around 6'9" I think and could grab guys from half the mat away and was just kneeing them into oblivion.

I have never heard it attributed to a south african before. The usual name that comes up in regard to who it was that made mincemeat out of the much, MUCH, shorter Japanese fighters, and made them hastily change the rules to bann grab+knee combos, is Dolph ludgren back in the late 70ies.
