Bobby Lupo - I would have never considered buying the book until clicking on this thread.

OP is the best possible marketer for Frank's book--makes it sound wildly interesting instead of just another boring MMA book. Things need to be marketed differently now.

Frank should come on the UG and thank Dongbar for getting people interested in his book

Just ordered this book thanks to this thread

Thinking i may pick this up as well.

Wonder how much was written by Frank himself compared to the co-author.

Ch. 5 The Lion’s Den
Ken Shamrock had a similar childhood as Frank. No father, absent drug addicted mother. Ken was on the streets literally fighting for food at age 10 after running away. Ken arrived at Bob’s ranch at around 15 and left at age 18. Once Ken had become an adult, Bob adopted him.

During the time Frank was serving time in Folsom; Bob’s wife had run off with one of the ranch’s boy to Hawaii and never returned. Bob never went on to marry again or date for that matter; he would go on to put all of his energy into the ranch, but specifically into Ken and Frank. Bob went on to manage Ken who was always getting into trouble fighting. Ken and Bob eventually moved to Reno so he could train with Buzz Sawyer to become a professional wrestler.

Around the time Frank had shown up in Lodi, Ken was already making the transition from pro wrestling to something called Pancrase, which originated in Japan and combined wrestling with submission holds. On April 7, 1994, Frank arrived at the Lion’s Den. He got the impression Ken wasn’t happy to see him. After all they didn’t know each other, besides the connection to Bob’s ranch. They were seemingly opposite personalities as well. Ken was super athletic and Frank was a druggie. Frank thought perhaps Ken felt threatened by the competition he might bring both physically and perhaps by the relationship he also had with Bob.

Vernon White, Scott Bessac, and Jason Delucia were all hanging out at the Lion’s Den when Frank had shown up for his try out. The tryout’s conditioning part consisted of 500 sit-ups, 500 squats, 500 leg lifts, and 250 pushups, all completed near a puke bucket. He said it was basically inevitable you’d puke if you were pushing yourself hard enough, but you’d just continue on, otherwise they’d think you weren’t trying hard enough and you’d be cut. The sole purpose was to weed guys out who didn’t have what it took physically or who didn’t have the heart and guts to cut it.

Frank made it through the conditioning and was passed to the next part of the try out which was sparring. Frank had never participated in a structured sparring session, but he could Ken, who’d he be sparring, was not going to take it easy on him. The session would start with 20 minutes on the clock and Frank got his ass kicked. Ken broke Frank’s nose with a palm strike and he thought they’d stop to clean up and stop the blood, but Ken continued the assault. Ken caught him with such a good body shot Frank had dropped to all fours. While trying to catch his breath Ken kicked him so hard in the body that he broke two of Frank’s ribs. Ken proceeded to chain together submission hold after submission hold, eventually popping all the tendons in one of Frank’s knees. While this was happening, one of the other guys asked if anyone had told Frank he could tap out. Frank was confused, but began yelling tap, tap, tap….it was basically too late, he had lasted the 20 minutes.

Ken seemed disgusted by Frank, but he had passed the tryout, so he was driven to Ken’s house where he had passed out in one of the upstairs bedrooms. He slept for two days and when he tried to come down the stairs his legs didn’t work. It took two weeks of icing and heat to walk without a limp and another two weeks to heal enough from the broken ribs to take a full breath.

Ken’s training background was that of an apprentice in a Japanese dojo, so that’s how he treated all of the new teammates. Frank soon found himself cleaning mats, carrying the other guy’s bags. He was basically a servant. He’d eventually become the warm up guy because of his size, but he wasn’t getting any formal training. Frank learned on the fly, and eventually learned the 10 positions of Pancrase. He said Ken was a fighter and not a teacher. He no patience, teaching ability, and couldn’t articulate direction well. He was a bully. He said the Lion’s Den was more about working out than becoming a well-rounded martial artist. There was no concept of cardio. They’d drilling wrestling for an hour, run 2 miles, lift weights, and spar.

In prison Frank had become a good listener and it served him well in the Lion’s Den. He also ended up taking copious amounts of notes. He soon noticed a contrast in himself and the other fighters training there. He was smart and naturally athletic, while the others were mostly just tough guys that could dish out punishment and take it too. He also stated because he didn’t have any background in the sport, he didn’t have bad habits to unlearn. In the fall of 1994 Frank was sent to Japan to finish his training and finally participate in a fight.

Frank remotely touches on that in the first chapter, but honestly the way he tries to explain it is terribly confusing and not as detailed. Cindy's explanation is much more clear. Phone Post
