Carlos Condit’s trainer Mike Winkeljohn recently appeared on the Sherdog Radio Network’s “Rewind” show, and talked Condit's fight vs. Georges St-Pierre at UFC 154 on Nov. 17 in Montreal, Quebec, Canada.

“Georges is the best in the world at what he does, but at the same time, we know what he does,” said Winklejohn. “He does that, and hardly anybody’s been able really to stop it, but with that being said, Carlos has got something for him. Every time he wants to shoot in, we want to not give him the proper distance. We want to not be there when he does shoot, but when he does, we want to have something there for him.”

“He definitely followed my game plan for Nick Diaz to a T, but with that being said, it’s different with Georges. Nick comes back from the dead. I think Carlos can unload on Georges and do damage early, and that will pay benefits as we go on … . You will see a different fight that way. The way to fight Georges is not to back away and touch him because he’s going to eventually take you down and ride out a decision that way and he could finish you. Georges is great in many different positions, but the way to beat Georges is to hurt him.”

“That’s what this fight is going to come down to: Carlos can strike from so many places. He can hurt you in so many ways. What people have forgotten is that early in Carlos’ career, he was tapping people out left and right. Carlos is great with his submissions and working on them daily.”

“(GSP) wants to time Carlos’ footwork to come forward and shoot on Carlos,” Winkeljohn said. “There’s no doubt about it. He’s got to close the gap. Carlos is longer -- we know that, so that’s what we’re looking for. Things are going to happen when one of the two guys close the gap.”

Everybody talks the big game plan against George and then when they actually get in there they look lost when they realize the plan is not gonna work. Then they basically go into survival mode as George dominates in whatever way he feels.

George will shoot whenever he wants and a Condit won't be able to stop it and won't have "something waiting" Phone Post

Funny how he said "everybody knows what he does they just can't stop it".
I feel like with Georges he hits you wherever you are weakest, and if you have very little weakness like BJ, he's gonna switch back and forth, change levels a lot, keep you guessing and tire you out.
I'm not sure you can anticipate his game because he's good everywhere and adapts to his opponent.
With Carlos though once Georges starts dictating the pace Carlos will be on defense the entire time trying to keep from getting subbed. Phone Post

Isn't the best way of winning any fight is to hurt your opponent?

If you don't engage with GSP he'll chase you down and take you down.

If you engage with him he'll take you down, unless you hurt him.

so the goal is to hurt him.

No, he basically says the strategy he came up for with Nick was for Carlos to point-fight him, because Diaz is near un-finishable.

GSP, on the other hand, is near impossible to out-point. So his strategy will be to hurt GSP (or he's trying to sell the fight by saying Carlos won't be the Carlos we saw last fight)

When it comes to fighting GSP, isn't it EVERYBODY'S plan to hurt him or "rough him up" or "make it a dog fight"??? Everybody who has faced him has said this. It's nothing new.

And what's the coaching scheme like at Jacksons/Winklejohn's MMA? Sure, Greg Jackson isn't cornering Condit, but has Winklejohn worked with GSP? Is the coaching at Jacksons so segregated that Winklejohn has no knowledge of GSP's training? Does Winklejohn not feel the same loyalty to GSP that Jackson does? It seems so pointless for just Jackson not to corner Condit.

I'm not sure why GSP is even still with Jackson's. He does the vast majority of his training in Montreal and NYC.

Um, resetting won't work about GSP.

God help Condit if it goes to a decision.  That will scar him for life.

Prediction:  Condit is getting GSP'd

Gameplan: Hurt GSP
Step One: Accept fight
Step Two: Give GSP a present, most perferrbly Rushfit, because that shows you care and admire him.
Step 3: Ask him about his life and really see to listen
Step 4: after he puts trust in you, ask him if he wants to watch the next UFC at a bar
Step 5: Do not show up and do not answer his calle. Having yourself yell "209 til the death" is optional in your voicemail. This will hurt his feelings
Step 6: Walk into the octagon knowing you already succeeded your gameplan
Step 7: regret step one Phone Post

So, all condit has to do is stop the takedowns. Sounds simple enough. I can't see a problem. Phone Post

"Well I think that if Carlos knocks him out he would win the fight."

"I think getting GSP in a submission is the best way to make him tap out."

It reminds me of the Maddenisms on the old Monday Night Football"

It's easy to make fun of a general strategy like this, but the point Winkeljohn is getting at is that he thinks GSP fights mentally weak.

I think he's hinting at the fact that if you'll never win at point fighting because GSP dominates where the fight goes, and you can't just go for the early KO or sub because of how hard that is against GSP. You've got to stop his bully fighting early and avoid him choosing how the fight goes, kind of how everyone said the only way to deal with AS is to go at him and hurt him early -- course that's also an example of easier said than done...
