GenericAmerican - Too bad on the contents. If you're lucky they'll estimate for the professional labor rate to gut the house, but worst case make sure you at least get minimum wage for your hours working on it.

I've only had limited experience working with FEMA, but they might be able to get help from them on the contents that weren't covered. I don't know exactly what their rules are, but it's worth a shot.

Hopefully you're over the worst part and everything gets better from here.

hey man quick question...the adjustor came out 2 weeks ago but still hasnt put my claim in says he wants to see everyone in the area that he has to before he puts claims in. Is this normal? what can I do to expedite? My hopes were to have the kids home by Xmas but thats not looking likely...the thought of them waking up in the basement of our friends house is goign to drive me over the edge. I know the best bet is to keep it cool with the adjustor so I feel stuck. any advice?

Sorry, I haven't been on the forums in a couple days.

What happens is the adjusters get overloaded in these large distaster events and everyone wants them out to inspect right away, but the paperwork starts to backlog. The inspecting is the easy part, the paperwork takes at least twice as long.

I would call the guy every couple of days until he has submitted the claim. The people reviewing it at the next step up the chain are probably also backlogged, so if he hasn't even gotten it submitted, it's hard to say how long the process will be.

Don't worry about pissing him off just for asking for your claim to be processed in a reasonable amount of time. If he were to do anything to negatively effect your claim because he didn't like you, he could lose his adjusting license and be effectively barred from ever working in the industry again.

Did he give you a business card or anything else that might indicate who he is working for? FEMA (which is over the Flood Insurance Program) does have their own people working directly for them, but in large events, a lot of the adjusters are working for an outside company that has contracted with FEMA. If you can find out who the adjusters boss is and try to contact them directly, you could probably get a fast response.

I've been that guy who is 2 weeks behind on paperwork, so it doesn't mean the guy is necessarily doing anything wrong, But he is working on the paperwork at night and his list of priorities is probably based on who is calling him the most.
I called him left a message and was very calm and nice it must've worked at least a little they gave me a small advance so I could at least get started Phone Post

A few of the students from my BJJ school will be in Union Beach tomorrow to help with the cleanup. What do you need from us? Food, clothing? PM me.

I'm so sorry to hear this.  I wish I could help, but my wife and I both lost our jobs in the last two months, and we had just bought a house a couple of months earlier, so our savings largely went on the downpayment.  It looks like I'm going to start working again in a few weeks, but until then, I have to be really careful with the little bit of money I have.  I hope you and your boy are back on your feet before I start getting paid, but if you still need help by then, I'll do what I can to chip in.

Meanwhile, this thread has done its bit to restore a part of my faith in humanity.  It's times like these I love the UG.  Huge props to Suess for being the first one to step up.  It goes without saying that I'm voting him up, but it seems like a bit of an empty gesture compared to the generosity not only of his offer here, but of his ways in general in the short time I've "known" him.

Meanwhile, NJstileNJ, my thoughts go out to you, your boy, and those close to you.  I'm saddened by your story and I hope this hardship will be followed by a much greater happiness.  All my best, man.  Stay strong.  Keep us posted.

Oh, and no such thing as "WFA" when it comes to stuff like this.  You're one of ours, man.

Glad you got the advance. The adjuster is probably starting to focus more on the paperwork now that the bulk of the inspections are done.

If you have any other questions or issues, email me (I'll see it instantly instead of when I get around to checking on here). msmith@dmaclaims.com

Good to hear. Unless there is a coverage issue you haven't mentioned, the money will come. It's not a matter of them trying to delay it, it's just the amount of claims they have to try to process at the same time.

My best recommendation is to call the adjuster a couple times a week until he confirms he has submitted everything. Then ask him who it was submitted to (he probably will not have a specific person's name, just an office or department). Get the number for them and start calling them a couple times a week.

They probably have thousands of claims, maybe tens of thousands, waiting for review & payment. They generally try to handle them in order they were received, but someone is going to be lucky enough to get their claim reviewed first and someone is going to be last. Calling them and asking nicely could very likely shave a week or two off of the time it takes to get paid.
