Pascal Hoping The Lucian Bute Clash Gets Finalized

By Bill "Two Scoops" Emes

Former light heavyweight champion Jean Pascal (27-2-1, 16KOs) advised BoxingScene.com that he's crossing his fingers that a deal is finalized to face Lucian Bute (31-1, 24KOs) in a Canadian super-fight on May 25th. A few weeks ago, BoxingScene first reported that a deal was reached between the respective promoters of the two Canadian stars.

The big sticking point was Pascal being scheduled to face WBC champion Chad Dawson (31-2, 17KOs) on the same May date, with HBO televising. But the fight with Bute is a much bigger event, and a bigger payday, for Pascal.

"I know two things for sure. I'm fighting on May 25th and I'm fighting a southpaw. I hope that I'm going to fight Bute, because if I fight him it's going to be at the Olympic Stadium with 25,000 people. It will be an epic fight in Montreal. It's going to be crazy. It's going to be the biggest fight in Canadian history. That's the fight that I want, that's the fight that the fans want and that's the fight that HBO wants," Pascal told BoxingScene.com.

Abril-Bogere Sells 1,137 Tickets, Does $116K Gate

by David P. Greisman

The March 2 card featuring a main event of Richard Abril vs. Sharif Bogere had 1,137 tickets sold and another 311 tickets given away for free, according to figures provided by the Nevada State Athletic Commission. Another 209 tickets went unsold. The seven-fight card -- held at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas and aired on Showtime and Showtime Extreme -- pulled in a total gate of $116,250.

That is an average of $102.24 per ticket sold. These figures are comparable with the Jan. 26 card featuring a main event of Lucas Matthysse against late replacement Mike Dallas Jr. That card also had 1,137 tickets sold, with 376 tickets given away for free and 145 tickets going unsold. The gate was $116,925, for an average of $102.84 per ticket sold.

Abril vs. Bogere wasn't initially going to take place in Las Vegas, nor was it to be the main event. It was supposed to be a supporting bout to a featherweight title bout featuring Daniel Ponce De Leon vs. Jayson Velez at the Apollo Theater in New York City. But when Velez got injured prior to that bout, the card was moved out west. Abril, who holds a lightweight title belt, scored a unanimous decision over Bogere and improved to 18-3-1 with 8 knockouts. Bogere suffered his first pro loss and is now 23-1 with 15 knockouts.

My bets depend heavily on who is the underdog. If dropping 100 bones doubles me up or gets me a considerable amount and I like the match up, i'll risk the upset.

Examples being right here. My bets are with Judah and Guerrero 100 Bones each to return 500 if Guerrero pulls one out his ass and 425 if Judah pulls a rabbit.

Thats what i'm sayin

I wish lines came out sooner in some cases because I like to get the finances in order. It ends up being a situation where I see a great fight and lose 100 I could afford, or epicness.

I'm about to sign you in as an actor in my Tron:Story of the UG thread Mr. Bonds. You deserve a roll.

I'd be surprised if Golovkin jumps two weight classes, and I can't see Hop taking that fight...high risk/low reward, even though I think he'd give Gennady issues.

Russell Jr. Declines 50 Cent's Offer To Join SMS

(CAPITOL HEIGHTS, MD.) - Gary Russell, Jr. (Capitol Heights, Md.) and his team, led by his father and trainer Gary Russell, Sr., are committed to their game plan for the undefeated featherweight's career. Russell has recently been courted by 50 Cent's SMS Promotions, but the 24-year-old has no plans to make changes to his team.

"Over the last few days, we've been getting a number of phone calls from 50 Cent's SMS Promotions.  They want us to sign with their camp.  I don't have anything against his team; but we are not interested...I'm not interested," Russell said. "Like I've said before Team Russell is not signed to any promotions team. I have a manager, Al Haymon, and he is the only person I'm signed with."

As boxing is a family affair in the Russell household, the 2008 Olympian and his team approach his career in the same manner.

"Growing up with all brothers, our father taught us a long time ago that loyalty is important. I feel the same way about my relationship with Al. We consider him a part of our boxing family.  Al has been a big part of my career and things are going smooth.  Our working relationship with Golden Boy Promotions has also been great," Russell said.We would not sign with any promotional team without having a conversation with Al.  We have watched folks commit what we feel is boxing suicide by going against the grain. We like the way I'm being moved along, and the dates, venues, and television time I have received have all been positive for my career. So while my team appreciates the offer, we chose to decline the proposal from SMS."

A 2008 Olympian, Russell enjoys a 22-0 record and has hopes to end the year as a World Champion. He is coming off a unanimous decision victory over Vyacheslav Gusev on March 2 in Las Vegas. Russell suffered a hairline fracture to his left hand in the 10 round win and has been advised by his doctor to rest the hand for six to eight weeks.

Wilder-Thompson in the making?

By Wolfgang Schiffbauer

According to Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer, an exciting heavyweight matchup between unbeaten knockout artist Deontay Wilder (27-0, 27 KOs) and IBF #9 Tony Thompson (37-3, 25 KOs) could happen in the next couple months. Schaefer apparently wants to match the two Americans in a CBS televised boxing event in order to showcase Wilder in front of a national audience against the toughest opponent of his young career. In regard to CBS, Schaefer said to the New York Fight Blog at ESPN: “We want to expose boxing to sports fans who haven’t really watched boxing.”

Thompson is coming off a shocking upset win over another unbeaten prospect in Englishman David Price last February. Regarded as a huge underdog, Thompson, who had lost his last fight to World Heavyweight Champion Wladimir Klitschko by TKO, knocked Price out cold in the second with a left hook that silenced the cheering hometown-crowd of the unbeaten Brit in Liverpool. The 41-years old “Tiger” from Washington has fought and beaten proven fighters such as Maurice Harris, Chazz Whiterspoon, Luan Krasniqi or Timur Ibragimov. Two of his three defeats came at the hands of Klitschko in world title efforts.

Wilder, on the other hand, turned pro in 2008 after capturing an Olympic Bronze Medal in the heavyweight class at the Beijing Olympics. “The Bronze Bomber”, at age 27, has since won all of his 27 bouts by knockout, albeit against much lesser opposition. In his last outing in January, he stopped journeyman Matthew Greer in two rounds. It is safe to say that Thompson would be the biggest test Wilder has faced as a professional prizefighter as of now.

If Schaefer’s plan comes off and Wilder and Thompson will face each other in the ring, it will mark an important day in American heavyweight boxing. Wilder could prove that he is a serious contender for the heavyweight crown. Should he lose to Thompson, though, the “Tiger” would remain the top dog of American heavyweights. A top dog who, despite being a solid fighter and a threat to every other big guy out there, has lost twice already to the reigning champ.

That would be crazy if Wilder can succeed against Thompson where David Price failed.
