De La Hoya: Miguel Cotto is also an Option For Canelo                                                                                                                                             Article Link - http://www.boxingscene.com/?m=show&opt=printable&id=64724#ixzz2RFigxMAc

By Miguel Rivera

Golden Boy Promotions President Oscar De La Hoya has big plans for WBC/WBA junior middleweight champion Saul "Canelo" Alvarez (42-0-1, 30KOs). After unifying the titles on Saturday night with a decision victory over Austin Trout, the Mexican star is looking for big things in the fall. Canelo wants to return on Mexican Independence Day Weekend, September 14th, in a major fight.

At the top of Canelo's list is Floyd Mayweather Jr. (43-0, 26KOs), who defends his title on May 4th in Las Vegas against Robert "The Ghost" Guerrero (31-1-1, 18KOs). If a deal with Mayweather cannot be reached, or Guerrero pulls of a major upset, then another good possibility for the fall is former three division world champion Miguel Cotto (37-3, 30KOs) of Puerto Rico.

"We have very big plans for the Canelo Alvarez. What I will do is invite [Canelo] to sit and watch the Mayweather fight on May 4, to study [Mayweather] and then make a decision. Canelo wants Mayweather, but Floyd has to beat Guerrero first and that is not an easy fight. [Cotto and Mayweather] are both options, but Canelo Alvarez has said that he wants to fight the best and the best is currently Floyd Mayweather. But we have to see what will happen on May 4 because there is no guarantee [that Mayweather will win]. Guerrero is tough. If there is a day where Floyd could lose his undefeated record, it would be on May 4th," De La Hoya told GDA Deportes.

Khan on Working With Conte, WBC Ranking, More                                                                                                                                                  Article Link - http://www.boxingscene.com/?m=show&opt=printable&id=64690#ixzz2RFkoyIqM

By Nick Parkinson, courtesy of The Daily Star

AMIR KHAN is working with supplement provider Victor Conte ahead of next Saturday’s clash with Julio Diaz in Sheffield.

Conte, who pleaded guilty to conspiracy to distribute steroids in 2005, was at the centre of the BALCO doping scandal in which Dwain Chambers and Olympic sprint champion Marion Jones were implicated.

American Conte, 62, served a four-month prison sentence for his actions and is now an anti-drug campaigner who works with both the world and US anti-doping agencies in a bid to clean up sport.

Khan has also hit out at drugs cheats after Lamont Peterson tested positive for a banned substance following his points win over the Briton in a world title fight in December 2011.

And former world light-welterweight champ Khan, 26, says he has not been using Conte’s supplements ahead of facing Mexican Diaz.

He said: “Victor has his own little team of coaches. We have been working with his strength and conditioning coaches.

“He has his own supplement company but I haven’t used that because I am sponsored by another company.

“He has been giving me advice on training methods and helping out with trainers. He has a track coach who I’m also working with.”

Conte confirmed that Khan is undergoing random blood and urine testing with USADA ahead of Saturday’s fight.

He said: “Amir has been training on the track with sprint guru Remi Korchemny.

“Remi and I have worked together for more than 15 years and we have both been impressed, not only with Amir’s speed on the track but also his level of determination.

The track training sessions with Remi are known to be extremely difficult – but Amir seems to always be at the front of the group.”

Khan whose brother Haroon, 21, makes his professional debut at super-flyweight on the same bill, admits his 12-round non-title catch-weight fight with Diaz could be his last in the UK.

The plan is to meet either Peterson or Danny Garcia – who knocked Khan out in four rounds last year – before chasing a mega-fight with Floyd Mayweather Jr.

The Bolton-born boxer said: “It will most probably be my last fight in the UK and I want the fans to enjoy it – I will put in a big performance.

“Beating Diaz will hopefully put me in a good position and then I will get a title shot at the end of the year. I will fight twice this year because Ramadan is in the middle of the year.

“I’m No.2 with the WBC in their rankings without even fighting at welterweight. Maybe it is because the WBC regard me as one of the people who could fight Mayweather.

“For me, to be ranked No.2 with the WBC is getting me closer to a super-fight. But I have to take care of the light-welterweight division first – I want to clean it up and get revenge on either Garcia or Peterson later this year.”

From what I gather, Bradley/Marquez is almost a done deal. And in my opinion, Marquez would scorch Rios.

Bryant Jennings vs. Andrey Fedosov Set For June 14                                                                                                                                                Article Link - http://www.boxingscene.com/?m=show&opt=printable&id=64749#ixzz2RM98p9ks

Bethlehem, PA- World-class boxing returns to the Sands Casino Resort Bethlehem on Friday evening, June 14, when a blockbuster triple header of fights with international as well as national implications headlines a card which will be televised live by the NBC Sports Network as part of its popular Fight Night series, beginning 9pm ET.

In a 10-round heavyweight contest, fast-rising Bryant Jennings, of Philadelphia, PA, will come up against powerful Andrey Fedosov, of Shuya, Russia.

Knockout artist Sergey Kovalev faces Cornelius White of Houston, TX, in a 12-round mandated bout for the vacant number 1 position in the IBF light heavyweight world rankings.

In the opening bout, a 10-round welterweight match, Bethlehem's Ronald Cruz hopes to rebound from his first loss as a pro when he takes on rugged Jaime Herrera, of Franklin Park, IL.

Jennings, 28, broke into the world ratings in 2012 by winning all five of his fights (four of them televised by the NBC Sports Network), topped by wins over previously unbeaten southpaw Maurice Byarm, of Washington, DC, and former WBO heavyweight champion Siarhei Liakhovich, of Vitebsk, Belarus. Those wins pushed Jennings' record to 16-0, 8 KOs, and landed him the # 3 spot in the world ratings by the IBF. Pretty heady stuff for a fighter who turned pro in 2010!

Fedosov, 27, also is riding high after knocking out veteran Darnell Wilson, of Takoma Park, MD, in his last fight April 20 in Hammond, IN, bringing his record to 24-2, 19 KOs.

Kovalev, 30, is currently ranked #4 by the IBF, 20-0-1,18 KOs and impressed Fight Night viewers in January with a dominant stoppage of former champion Gabriel Campillo. The highly anticipated test for Kovalev ended when Campillo made three trips to the canvas in round three. Since then, everyone has been buzzing about the Russian puncher, who now fights out of Ft. Lauderdale, FL. Kovalev's previous two starts were also televised by NBC Sports Network.

Cornelius "Da Beast" White, 31, is currently ranked #5 by the IBF and sports a record of 21-1, 16 KOs. The pair will enter the ring with rather similar records, but White will have the size advantage.

In the welterweight matchup, Cruz, 26, hopes to get back on the winning track after losing for the first time when he dropped a 10-round split decision to contender Antwone Smith, of Miami, FL, in his last fight Sept. 21 in the same ring.

A pro since 2009, Cruz is 17-1, 12 KOs. Both Cruz-Brewer and Cruz's previous fight against Prenice Brewer were televised by NBC Sports Network.

Herrera, 24, likes to walk-in and bang, a style which should make his fight with Cruz a war. A pro since 2009, Herrera is 10-2, 5 KOs, but may have been unlucky to drop an eight-round decision to Adrian Granados, of Cicero, IL, in 2012. Many ringsiders felt Herrera did enough to beat Granados, who recently boxed a 10-round draw with Kermit Cintron, of Reading, PA.

Darchinyan Will Not Step Aside For Donaire-Terrazas                                                                                                                                                Article Link - http://www.boxingscene.com/?m=show&opt=printable&id=64729#ixzz2RMAQStue

By Rick Reeno

Manager Frank Espinoza advised BoxingScene.com that Vic Darchinyan (38-5-1, 27KOs) will not step aside in order for Nonito Donaire to get the opportunity to face WBC super bantamweight champion Victor Terrazas in October.

Espinoza was responding to an earlier article on BoxingScene, where Top Rank's CEO Bob Arum had stated that Donaire may possibly remain at 122-pounds and face Terrazas in the fall.

Darchinyan, the NABF champion, is the top WBC contender at 122 and first in line for a crack at Terrazas' title. Darchinyan will make his Top Rank promotional debut on May 11th against Javier Gallo at the Uni-Trade Stadium in Laredo, Texas.

"Vic earned his postion and he wants to get that first shot at Terrazas. After he wins the title, then he would be more than happy to fight Donaire in a rematch. I even saw something on your site a few days ago where [promoter] Fernando Beltran said the Terrazas-Mijares winner would have to fight Darchinyan next," Espinoza said.

Lots of boxing this Saturday! Amir Khan-Julio Diaz, Sergio Martinez-Martin Murray, Peter Quillin-Fernando Guerrero and Zab Judah-Danny Garcia.

I'll try to make time for that little MMA thing that is going on too.

I've been one who's accused Floyd of cherry picking over the years. If he chooses Alvarado as his next for, it will reinforce that opinion of mine.

Alvarado & Rios, like Gatti & Ward; put on great fights against each other but I think both likely get chewed up by the upper echelon fighters. I think they'd be wise to fight each other again for big money before looking elsewhere. Phone Post

Floyd won't wanna spoil that lucrative 30 month Showtime contract with a loss in his second fight (not saying he'd lose to Canelo, but it's a risky fight, particularly if it's at 154). He'll probably wait a while before he fights Canelo.

It's a bit of a Catch-22. If he fights Canelo now and loses, he misses out on a bunch of future paydays, and if he fights him in a year or so, he runs the risk of being even more past his prime while giving Canelo even more time to improve as a fighter.

Floyd strikes me as the cash out type like Tyson. If this 30 month contract is real I'm all but certain his last two will be with Pacquiao and Canelo.

Kinda like how Tyson wanted Lewis and Jones at the end of his career.

Tebow - The problem is that (as you pointed out) there are zero entertaining fights for Mayweather outside of Canelo/Pacquiao (Martinez too, but that's a pipe dream).

We all know that after the Cotto fight that Floyd is not gonna go back to 154 (at least for the time being). Who is there for him at 147? Can't hate on Guerrero because he's the mandatory at 147, but I'm not too interested in that fight. Bradley is the only somewhat plausible fight. Other than that though, it's pretty empty.

If he does want to cash out at the end of the 30 months, he's gonna have to get creative with his matchmaking in the interim.
