Considering the circumstances, I'd say that's a good buy rate. Phone Post

500k is pretty low for a Pacquiao fight isn't it?

Not to mention that if Arum is saying 500k then the real numbers are probably below that.

Well, considering Pacquiao was coming off a devastating loss, was facing a relatively unknown opponent who was also coming off a loss and was headlining perhaps the shittiest undercard ever... I'd say those numbers are ok. Phone Post

Golovkin's Promoter Responds To Schaefer's Comments

By Robert Morales

Tom Loeffler was not thrilled to read Richard Schaefer's comments in BoxingScene.com's Insider Notebook this week. Schaefer, CEO of Golden Boy Promotions, for one thing complained about what he believes is a lack of respect from Team Gennady Golovkin towward Golden Boy in regards to Golden Boy's middleweight champion Peter Quillin.

Fellow champion Golovkin is promoted by K2-Promotions, for which Loeffler is general manager.

"I like to do great fights and I don't have a problem and I know Peter Quillin has no problem with fighting anybody, including Golovkin," Schaefer said. "But I have to tell you, what doesn't get one very far with me is when they become disrespectful. Like Abel Sanchez (Golovkin's trainer) has, and Tom Loeffler has, and HBO has by not wanting to work with us.

"So as long as these kinds of situations exist, I see no chance of that fight happening. I never said a bad word about Golovkin because I believe Golovkin is a very talented fighter."

Schaefer also took shots at the idea that Golovkin is next going to defend his title against Osumanu Adama of Ghana on Feb. 1 in Monte Carlo, Monaco.

"You have to look at the quality of the opposition," Schaefer said. "Who do you think is going to win in Monaco? They just announced the fight. The guy (Adama), I forget his name, I've never heard of him. So I tell you what's going to happen: Golovkin is going to knock the guy out and certain TV (announcers), like Max Kellerman, he's going to be like jumping up and down and he's going to say what kind of animal Golovkin is, that this is like the knockout of the knockout. You know that's going to happen.

"I don't like to do those fights. I don't like to see fights where you know who's going to win. And I think even Larry Merchant in a recent interview on BoxingScene, alluded to the fact that these one-sided matchups are going to have to stop."

For one thing, Loeffler is peeved that his name was thrown in that mix of people who have supposedly been disrespectful toward Golden Boy. For another, he intimated Schaefer has some nerve bad-mouthing one of Golovkin's opponents, especially since one of Quillin's more recent foes - Fernando Guerrero - was stopped by middle-of-the-road Grady Brewer in the fourth round in 2011. Brewer was 40 at the time with a record of 27-12.

"I think it's unfair of him (Schaefer) to criticize Adama when (one of) Quillin's last opponents was Fernando Guerrero, who got knocked out by Grady Brewer," Loeffler said.

"We never said that publicly, but if he's going to criticize Gennady's opponents, we firmly stand behind the fact that people have gone out of their way to avoid Gennady. (Daniel) Geale vacated the title in order not to fight him. Felix Sturm avoided him for a number of years. (Dmitry) Pirog, who knocked out Danny Jacobs, was supposed to fight him and he got injured. And the list goes on and on.

"So anyone who is critical of his opponents is just not realistic as to who's actually willing to get in the ring with him. I know Abel has been critical of Quillin as far as the whole Showtime thing. The feud between Showtime and HBO is completely out of our control. I've never said anything negative about Golden Boy or Peter Quillin."

A title unification bout between Golovkin and Quillin becomes more difficult to make than usual because Golovkin fights on HBO, Quillin on rival Showtime. Still, Loeffler would love that fight to take place.

"I think Peter Quillin is a great champion, who is undefeated," Loeffler said. "At some point, it would be a great fight."

Schaefer at times over the past year has said that Golovkin, of Kazakhstan, was not yet known enough in the States to warrant a fight with Quillin. Loeffler noted that Golovkin's most recent HBO fight - an 8th-round TKO of Curtis Stevens at Madison Square Garden - drew the third-highest rating of any boxing show on cable television this year. Neither of the other two involved Quillin.

Arum Believes Pacquiao-Provodnikov Can Be Made

By Keith Idec

NEW YORK — Bob Arum made a joke Wednesday about closing in on his 82nd birthday and admits it’s slightly possible he misheard Ruslan Provodnikov.

But the Hall-of-Fame promoter is virtually certain Provodnikov told him in the aftermath of Manny Pacquiao’s easy victory over Brandon Rios last month that the rugged Russian brawler would fight Manny Pacquiao next year. That’s why Arum hasn’t eliminated Provodnikov as one of Pacquiao’s options for his next fight April 12 in Las Vegas, despite Provodnikov stating that his friendship with Pacquiao and the fact that they share trainer Freddie Roach would prevent them from fighting.

With Juan Manuel Marquez seemingly disinterested in a fifth fight against the Filipino superstar and a Pacquiao-Mayweather showdown no closer to materializing, Arum considers a Provodnikov clash and a rematch against Timothy Bradley as Pacquiao’s top options. Battling Bradley would afford Pacquiao an opportunity to avenge a dubious split-decision defeat in their first fight, but a Pacquiao-Provodnikov bout would be highly entertaining.

“I really believe that the Russians want to do that fight,” Arum told BoxingScene.com, referring to Provodnikov’s representatives. “They want to do Ruslan against Pacquiao. I know [Provodnikov promoter] Artie [Pelullo] does, [Provodnikov manager] Vadim [Kornilov] does. And I think they were playing a game, because after the fight Ruslan was in the corner when I came down from the ring. And he told me, at least I think he told me, ‘Bob, I fight Pacquiao next year.’ He told me that.

“Now, could he have not said that and said something else because of his thick accent? Yeah. But I would be willing to swear that’s what he said to me. That was right after the fight. So that’s why I don’t believe that he won’t fight him. I think they told him to say, ‘I don’t want to fight Manny,’ in an effort to build the purse. You know what they say, if the broad is too easy.”

Arum smiled and didn’t finish that sentence, but his message was clear.

Provodnikov (23-2, 16 KOs) has been anything but easy on recent opponents. He battered Bradley (31-0, 12 KOs, 1 NC) during a unanimous-decision defeat March 16 in Carson, Calif., that’ll receive strong “Fight of the Year” consideration. In his next fight, Provodnikov stopped Mike Alvarado (34-2, 23 KOs) after 10 rounds Oct. 19 in Broomfield, Colo., to win the WBO junior welterweight title.

The 29-year-old Provodnikov intends, however, to move back up to welterweight, the division in which he boxed Bradley. With the amount of money Provodnikov could make for opposing Pacquiao (55-5-2, 38 KOs) at 147 pounds, Arum doesn’t think their friendship will prohibit Provodnikov from pursuing it.

“How many times,” Arum said, “have you heard from guys, ‘I’m not going to fight him because he’s my friend?’ First of all, is Manny a friend of his? They can’t even speak [to each other]. Manny certainly likes him and they trained together, but I wouldn’t say they’re friends. They’re not unfriendly, but they’re not guys that call each other up every day and talk.”

Curtis Stevens-Patrick Majewski on Jan. 24, NBC Sports

ATLANTIC CITY - The popular nationally televised live boxing series, Fight Night, begins the new year with a bang on Friday, January 24th with an explosive double header from Resorts International Hotel Casino in Atlantic City. Topping the card, which will be telecast on NBC Sports Network Fight Night beginning at 10PM ET, is a 10-round middleweight contest between hard-hitting contender Curtis Stevens, 25-4, 18 KOs, and the iron-jawed Patrick Majewski, 21-2, 13 KOs.

"Showtime" Stevens, Brooklyn, NY, is coming off a gallant challenge of 160-pound champ Gennady Golovkin, and is eager to battle his way back to another title try. Stevens is known for his devastating punching power, and has scored quickies against seasoned Saul Roman, warrior Elvin Ayala, then-undefeated Piotr Wilczewski and many others. This time out, Stevens will learn if his fists can crack the granite in Majewski's chin.

Stevens said "I am back. I will show everyone the Curtis Stevens that they know and love."

Polish born Patrick "The Machine" Majewski now calls Atlantic City home, and will look to use his hometown advantage to surprise the highly-regarded Stevens. The Machine holds wins over world title challenger Antwun Echols, hot prospect Chris Fitzpatrick, as well as tough Philly fighters Jamaal Davis and Latif Mundy. Majewski is big and strong, and has only been off his feet once in his seven-year career. In Stevens, Majewski will face his toughest and most powerful foe to date.

"This is a great fight and it's a great opportunity. It's a big test," said Majewski, "I can't wait to get it on!"

The 10-round co-feature bout is another exciting matchup. South African cruiserweight, Thabiso Mchunu, 14-1, 10 KOs, takes on Philadelphia crowd-pleaser Garrett Wilson, 13-7-1, 7 KOs, in what figures to be an interesting clash of styles.

In his last bout, also on NBC Sports Network, Mchunu, spoiled the cruiserweight debut of Philly's Eddie Chambers with a dominant points win over the former heavyweight title challenger. The mysterious Mchunu, nicknamed "The Rock", displayed a tricky southpaw style against Chambers. With the upset, Thabiso sent a message to all cruiserweight contenders that he is ready for a run at the title. But first he must topple a dangerous opponent.

Mchunu is confident he will best Wilson. "Last time my win was clinical - This time it's gonna be catastrophic!"

Garrett Wilson won many fans last month when he stepped up to the heavyweight division on three days' notice to give undefeated prospect Czar Glazkov a load of trouble in their 10-round fight on NBC broadcast TV. The outing was typical fare for the "Ultimate Warrior", as Wilson showed fans outside of Philly why he is so popular within the City of Brotherly Love. He put on a breakthrough performance that was full of heart, attitude, toughness, and a hail of hard punches. Against Mchunu, Wilson gets another chance to make his mark on national TV.

Wilson anticipates giving his fans another great show,"I'm a cruiser weight who went the distance with a undefeated top ten rated heavy weight with an exceptionally high KO parentage on three days notice. Imagine what I will do with two months to train!"

"Curtis Stevens, Thabiso Mchunu and Garrett Wilson each made a big statement in their last fight and won over many fans. We've been fielding calls, emails and tweets asking when they'll be fighting again. We are so pleased that we can bring them back to NBCSN Fight Night for this Friday evening edition of the show. The addition of Patrick Majewski fits perfectly into that mix," said promoter Kathy Duva of Main Events.  "All of these boxers have interesting stories, contrasting styles, throw lots of big punches and will put it all on the line to entertain the fans and advance their careers.  This is the formula that has carried us successfully through our first two years on Fight Night.  We look forward to another exciting year in 2014."

This exciting boxing double header, filled with top boxers in important fights, fits the proven Fight Night pattern perfectly, and kicks off the third season of the popular series at 10PM ET on NBC Sports Network. In addition, the Friday night show gets the 2014 boxing year started with a real bang.

That horrible fucking scumbag Bob Arum is at it again I see.

In the very same sentence he lies about 17 times! Ugh!

There's only 2 fights that make sense for Manny right now and that's Bradley and Floyd (I'd include Marquez but I don't think he'll give him a rematch).

If Pac vs Rios can barely make 500k buys, why would you put him up against another relatively unknown fighter?

Don't get me wrong I think it'd be a good fight but its just not the right time for it. Phone Post 3.0

I'd rather see Pacquiao-Provodnikov than a rematch with Bradley. But it probably wouldn't sell well.

Then again Bradley is not a big draw either and people will remember their first fight and if they enjoyed it or not.

There's a couple of reasons I don't want to see that fight now.

1. It's a high risk, low reward fight for Manny, if he wins he was meant to win against what a casual fan would see as a nobody. If he loses, it makes a fight against Floyd almost impossible.

2. Why not Bradley??? Pac was robbed badly in their 1st fight. Bradley went on to beat the guy that KO'd Pac so this fight makes all the sense in the world. If it doesn't happen it's obvious Slob just wants to keep his undefeated champion.

To be honest I wouldn't give a fuck who he fights next as long as he fights Floyd after. Phone Post 3.0

I agree that Pac was robbed. The fight was one sided and boring though and I don't see anything changing if they meet again.

Pacquiao has to fight someone so that's probably who they'll go with. But at least with Provodnikov you would have a guy who would try to make a war out of it.

What are everyone's predictions for tomorrow?

I have Judah, Lara, and Dirrell (although I've only seen Bika fight once lol)

I'm also obviously picking Rigo over Agbeko. Don't know enough about Barker/Sturm to make an informed decision

It's a stacked weekend of boxing!
