I'm starting this thread right now because I know there are one or two guys who wanted help with SQL right away and have no interest in learning C# or Web programming.

If you are interested in C# and/or Web programming please ignore this thread for now and go here instead:

http://www.mixedmartialarts.com/mma.cfm?go=forum_framed.posts&forum=48&thread=2088032&page=1&pc=32

I'd rather have you learn the programming basics before worrying about SQL. We'll get there eventually, just focus on C# for now

For the few guys that want help or to learn SQL, give me some feedback:

  • Are you starting from scratch or do you want help with certain concepts?
  • Make sure you install the express version (unless you have a real version you can install) of SQL Server

Anyone interested in discussing stuff like LEFT JOIN vs COLUMN QUERY vs. OUTER APPLY stuff like that? Start with easier topics?

I posted this on another thread today and thought I'd re-post it here. Plus, I added a little extra at the end.

You might want to check out this free MS SQL training opportunity for unemployed people.

http://pragmaticworks.org/HighTechHope.aspx

I recently went through the videos and took notes, then took the quiz and passed. Send in your application soon because the next class starts 4/7/14 and they are running out of available seats. At the end of the one week course, they set you up with interviews.

Also, on a related note, if you start going through the videos, you will find out that you don't have to install SQL Express locally anymore as was originally recommended at the start of this thread. Microsoft now provides free Virtual Labs on TechNet. Here's the link:

https://vlabs.holsystems.com/vlabs/technet?eng=VLabs&auth=none&src=vlabs&altadd=true&labid=11647

Use IE to get to the link and launch the VM. For the video training above, use the MSBI VM and choose the AdventureWorks2012 database.

If you don't want to do the aforementioned videos, Microsoft provides a huge amount of free training exercises for several products at http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/virtuallabs

I would love to learn SQL form scratch, I've begun looking at the C# stuff, but I think database is more employable and stable for my family - which is all I care about.
