the hook and shoot events were really world class fighters

these were SHOOTO ranked events and as you see fighters came in from Japan etc

back them being ranked in SHOOTO was a big deal

even in 2002 Vitor Ribero was a highly ranked and accomplished grappler

from WIKI

Shooto is a mixed martial arts organization that is governed by the Shooto Association and the International Shooto Commission. Shooto was originally formed in 1985, as an organization and as a particular fighting system derived from shoot wrestling. Practitioners are referred to as shooters, similarly to practitioners of shoot wrestling. Shooto rules have evolved such that their events are now true mixed martial arts competitions.

HaoleBoy - some of the pics are from the WFA level 3 Event

it was held the night after UFC40 at the Aladdin (some sites say the joint at the hard rock but it was the Aladdin Event Center)

i was like the "who's who" of MMA just walking around and enjoying the event

[detail] Jeff Curran Todd Lally Submission 1st 4:49
[detail] Jason Black Chad Saunders TKO/RSC 2nd 5:00
[detail] Vitor Ribeiro Eddie Yagin Submission 2nd 2:23
[detail] Mike Van Arsdale Christopher Haseman TKO/RSC 2nd 3:10
[detail] Josh Thomson Rob McCullough Decision 3rd 5:00
[detail] Marvin Eastman Alex Stiebling TKO/RSC 1st 1:07 Title Fight
[detail] Frank Trigg Dennis Hallman TKO/RSC 1st 3:50

Caught these as well.

Tried to take signed poster by everyone from the press at WFA, but they took it back. I remember Mo trying to stir shit up as everyone was humble and respectful.

Voted up for sharing. Will have to dig up my old pics as well.

God Dayum Cheesecake. Voted up for that one. That does not look like him in my opinion, but I'm not questioning it.  I'll always remember Ivan for 2 things. Finishing a fight via body triangle. And Rousimar Palhares making him look like a blue belt when they fought. Imo, that was Paul Harris' coming out party.

here is some UFC 40 trivia for you (fromwiki)

Long time UFC referee "Big" John McCarthy said that he felt UFC 40 was the turning point in whether or not the sport of MMA would survive in America.
" "When that show (UFC 40) happened, I honestly felt like it was going to make it. Throughout the years, things were happening, and everything always looked bleak. It always looked like, this is it, this is going to be the last time. This is going to be the last year. But, when I was standing in the Octagon at UFC 40, I remember standing there before the Ortiz/Shamrock fight and looking around. The energy of that fight, it was phenomenal, and it was the first time I honestly said, it's going to make it." -"Big" John McCarthy[8]
