Me... after committing hate crimes at Songkran... I was slaughtering brownies left and right. I swear they started it - tried to gang up on whitey.

If she guarantees me a winning ticket - I am in!!

My buddy always jokes about his girlfriend's mom (out in the village)... she endlessly celebrates her 500 baht lottery victory, with no comprehension that she spent 10000 baht on tickets to win!

Missing Pai right now. Usually at this tme (9.15pm) I'm drunk on 70 baht big Leos and 40 baht Sangsom and Cokes at the smallest bar ever. In half and hour I would be stumbling down the walking street bartering deals with the street food vendors who still have food left.

:( :( :(

i would recommend the town or place where they are offering you a job

I've looked at vacancies online and there seems to be plenty of jobs to apply for all over the country. I have the qualifications but I'm still in the process of saving. I don't know which places are shit holes and which are awesome. Hence why I asked for help from strangers on the internet! From what I've read online I liked the sound of Krabi and Surat Thani

You want to live and work on tropical islands/areas near the beach? Shit, I don't think many other people moving over there think like that.

You should find a plethora of openings, and not much competition for jobs.

Two posts and someone's dishing out the Internet sarcasm, amazing. Of course I'd rather live near a beach. It's not a priority or anything, and I'm aware of the competition for jobs. I'm currently saving so I've got enough to support myself when I first get out there.

I've never been to Thailand before... All I'm asking for is the names of some cool towns and cities that aren't quite as manic as Bangkok.

No offense, but if you have never been to Thailand before and know nothing about the place, why are you certain you want to move there for work?

If you don't have any connections there either to help you out at first (friends, etc) you will likely find it a very stressful and difficult experience.

That said, Khon Kaen is nice and about the only province in the North East I could handle living in. Its like a mini Bangkok. The other cities in that region are more rural and lack most "Western" comforts.

My advice is to go there for 1-3 months, soak it in, check out some schools, talk to other foreign teachers (this experience alone may put you off) then return home and really think about your decision. Also be aware that a teaching job in Thailand that isn't at an international school is a dead end job that leads to nothing and is useless on a resume if you choose to return home as its the equivalent of flipping hamburgers. If you are comfortable with that, go for it.

(I never taught in Thailand, but have spent a considerable amount of time there since 2002 and have heard horror stories from friends about it)

And if you don't mind me asking, how old are you?
Late reply... My account got frozen for no reason. I'm 25, and I'm fairly well travelled, although I've never visited SE Asia. I have numerous friends around Asia doing the same as what I'm planning to do, one spent a year in Thailand and was pretty helpful with info but I'd still like to find out more before I go. I was laid off in february and theres no opportunity here at all. I'd rather spend a year in a warm country on my own than rotting on welfare looking for a worthwhile job here. I'm currently looking for any job that'll hire me so I can continue saving. I'm not looking to head out until later this year so I haven't started applying for jobs yet. I have looked at several vacancies though, and I'm hoping my tefl certificate along with past experience teaching music (drums) may seal the deal for me.

This thread has been helpful so far! Phone Post 3.0

Galt - I am in a TESOL course now.

On Friday I have to teach my peers (the other trainees) something that they can "produce" (teacher lingo) back to me... whole thing is 10 minutes.

I was thinking teach them to tie a tie... although this would require me to bring in *9* ties... and maybe even 9 shirts?

Any suggestions?

Our instructor said he would teach us how to roll a cigarette - and he would be bringing in 9... papers, tobacco, whatever else is required.

Galt - Right now I'm fucking an international school chick that speaks better English than I do. Luckily she pays for my shit too, she wants to take me up to Chiang Mai in the next few days.

Is she English?

I met 3 english chicks in Pai who said they taught at an international school in Bangkok. They were pretty ugly and, since it was early in the night and drunkenness hadn't set in, me and another mate (who was also english) talked shit about them to each other and they heard us. I felt kinda bad, but they left and we had the fireplace to ourselves!

places to train? Obviously there's Team Quest. Also hear Chay Yai is meant to be awesome..A lot of their fighters fight at Thapae stadium...Guy i trained with in Pai also trained at Santai just out of CM, said it was a fuckin great gym.

Go to Aroon Rai and have a kao soi if you haven't had one there yet.

Today I had lunch with my parents, my brother and his wife's family at his house. He said that I have become "much more laid back" since going to Thailand since I'm letting my hair grow, rarely wear shoes and he thought i was taking things as they came a lot more...guess thailand made me a hippie lol :P

I am in the final week (4/4) of my 120-hour TESOL course... shit is brutal.

On Wednesday we drive for 2 hours, into the rice paddies, and take over a Temple school - going to teach kids Fruit (apple, banana, coconut, etc).

I have been attempting to court a girl from T21... she is perfect... (slim, long legs, wears NO makeup, awesome fashion) and very conservative... so conservative she is afraid of me. (which is perfect)
