and that's why it is understandable for GSP not to take this fight.

Arguing about Anderson and GSP's exact weight disparity has been done over and over and it's stupid. The decision to move up isn't justified soley by being able to add enough pounds to be equal at the weigh-ins. It is a matter of your own fighting style and attributes being able to give you similar success when fighting a bigger opponent.

Anderson has better stand-up than just about anybody in MMA and his ability to knock people out hasn't changed when fighting at 205. The reach measurements include the width of the chest. If it's only shoulder to arms, I'd say Anderson is on par with most guys at 205 except Jones. Anderson also has one of the best chins in MMA. That also makes it easier for him to deal with 205ers. Dealing with strong wrestlers at 205 could be problematic for him. But a match like that hasn't been made yet.

GSP is primarily a wrestler/grappler and a striker second. He is strong and fast in his divison. He might lose some of his speed if he fights heavier. Put him up against bigger opponents and that strength is diminished to some extent. For a wrestler that's important, because he will have a hard time taking a bigger man down repeatedly. Using more energy/strength to get the takedown would tire him faster. Also, he would be dealing with guys who hit harder. I think GSP can take a punch but he doesn't have one of the best chins in the business. He's not a knockout artist at 170 so he would have an even harder time hurting a 185er on the feet.

We've seen BJ and Anderson successfully go up in weight cause they can still KO people at higher weights and can eat punches from bigger opponents. In Anderson's case he's also way too slick on the feet for anyone in any weightclass.

by the time I posted the thread I realized it was too long ...

Silva/Jones is similar to GSP/Anderson in that the smaller fighter is facing a potential bad match-up finisher who fights at a higher weight class. The difference is that Anderson has the capability to KO (finish) Jones at any point of the fight no matter how much of a size advantage Jones has.

Two things: GSP doesn't need to "move up" for this fight, and GSP has already claimed several of his opponents were at or close to 200lb on fight night, which is more than all logic and evidence suggests that Anderson would weigh at any kind of catchweight.

I can agree with the OP but it seems like Silva has way more to lose at least around here. He's either the guy who beat the "smaller" fighter or the one who loses to him. If GSP wins he looks even more amazing if he loses he can sort of shrug his shoulders, there's no shame in losing to Silva. Phone Post
