Probably the fact that he's partial to the gi, and is already getting paid.

Lack of motivation to do MMA is my guess.

He was focused on establishing his school in NYC leading up to his first MMA fight and didn't have the right training needed to adapt his game. Anyone who wants to can see his fight in K-1 Heroes and also read about why he left NYC so I don't need to describe it all in detail.

After that, he spent about 18 months at ATT in Florida, and with a proper camp he became significantly better at MMA, but K-1 didn't set him up with a proper opportunity until his contract expired (IIRC, he was offered a possible fight with Nick Diaz and other crazy shit like that).

He would have done MUCH better the second time around and really did want to prove himself. But during the time he was locked into the Heroes contract, he also wasn't able to dedicate himself as much to BJJ or compete in grappling tournaments, and he really missed it.

He also had the opportunity to return to New York and get a second chance to set up his own school - something that is a much more sustainable living than MMA, and he would be doing what he loved and teaching what he loved.

Does he have any regrets about his MMA career? Probably, but I think he's pretty happy where he is now. I wouldn't hold your breath for his return to MMA.

Why didn´t Karelin fight MMA? Or Klitschko or most of the Olympic Judo guys?

If you are a top athlete loving your sport and being very sucesfull in it why change?
