In this clip? ie bringing one foot back to generate more force, using the other leg to block the knee.

His reasoning makes a lot of sense. Just curious to hear from those who have switched to this method from a more traditional one. How is it working for you?

I do the hip bump a little different but I feel it is the most powerful sweep available. It´s more like a punch than a sweep:

Just watched it again, and I need to amend my statement; I do reposition my foot back like a sprinter to drive forward, but I do not usually drop my leg to block his leg. It makes sense in principle, but it just doesn't feel comfortable in real time against resistance to me. Phone Post

Yes, but I rarely use this sweep anymore. I actually like using it on people much bigger than me. More mass trying to posture => more momentum.

yeah, that is the part I was wondering about. just messing around without a partner, the driving foot feels pretty natural, but the blocking leg does feel a bit weird.

it is interesting, when you think about it, the driving foot seems like such an obvious adjustment. yet, when i was going through a hip bump adjustment phase recently, and watching every vid online i could find, none mentioned that.

I do a similar version to this. I try to emphasize the bridging motion and the "punch"with the hip. I think I heard Shawn Williams call it an "up and over " sweep while doing commentary for the worlds and I started to re-think the variation I'd learned. I find if I think of it as a bridge with the top hip and THEN a step up into the armpit (two separate movements) rather than a large generalized motion (which causes counter rotational weakness in the sweepers body) I have a higher degree of success. Hope that makes sense.

I don't focus on moving the driving foot so much as I try to bridge toward a direction (10 o clock if I'm sweeping to my left) that makes my top leg able to drive with strength.

No. I trap their hips with the leg Ryan traps their leg with. It's a detail that came from a Kron seminar a few years back. I wouldn't be opposed to playing with Ryan's method either, I suppose. It looks like it might accomplish the same goal in a different manner.

I think that was Michael Jen (Bolo) he has a pretty cool version of the Hip Bump Sweep somewhere on youtube great mechanics if I remember correctly.
