Here's a tragic guitar hero with so much more to give: Funkedalic's Eddie Hazel. Feel, tone, phrasing, soul.

Huge fan. VTFU for sharing Mr. Hazel.
Check out The Temptations' "Shakey Ground" for later Hazel. There's not a real solo, but the guitar is good, the writing great -- a gig he got after the drug problems set in and got him booted from Funkadelic.

Greg Tate wrote about what he "busted out" with on the Funkadelic tune "Super Stupid", too. Way ahead of its time in terms of mixing funk/R&B with metal.

Huh...YouTube's acting weird, won't give up the old embed code.

Never knew that was Hazel.  Thanks for the heads up.

Do you have his solo albums?  I got a hold of "Dames, Games, and Guitar Thangs" that has the "Jams From the Heart" EP tracks.  Working on getting "Rest in P" right now.

Yeah, I have all of those. Only "Games" was really an official record. The others are studio outtake compilations. They're worth having, but... there's a handful of Funkadelic recordings that are better. "Maggot Brain" is the classic, obviously, but check out "Standing on the Verge of Getting It On" and (I think) "Let's Take It to the Stage".

There's one more "solo" release, home-recordings that his family is selling (or was). I can't think of the title. Sound quality was almost unlistenable on that, and they were asking $30 for a cd.

If I recall correctly, Rest In P came out under a different title, too; but the Rest In P version has the same music (with different titles) as the "Jams from the Heart" EP, plus more.

Good to know.  I also acquired the Funkadelic stuff. too.  Hazel was from Plainfield, NJ, just a few towns east of where I grew up.  Funny enough, Harry Leahey was from North Plainfield.  Something about that area & monster guitarists.

Here's some early 90's Hazel, with Bernie Worrell & TM Stevens.  Music starts about 50 secs in.
