The Ultimate Fighter 16 Finale's Matt Mitrione was so concerned about being the best he could possibly be for Roy Nelson, he did something unusual for him: shut off Twitter.

An invitation to enroll with the Voluntary Anti-Doping Association, which was issued by Nelson more than a week ago, seemed like an unnecessary diversion, he said, though he's not opposed to drug testing

"Since I was coming on somewhat short notice, cutting a couple weeks out of my camp, and training for a five-round fight, this is something I wanted to make sure I didn't have any thing that could distract me," Mitrione told MMAjunkie.com.

VADA conducts random drug screens of enrolled athletes and utilizes tests not traditionally performed by most state athletic commissions, including carbon isotope radio (CIR) testing and screens for human growth hormone and erythropoietin (EPO). It costs several thousand dollars to enroll, however, the group previously has offered sponsorships to fighters, including Nelson.

"Obviously, it isn't ideal to have someone begin a program this late," wrote VADA President Margaret Goodman in an email. "So, in my mind … although not ideal, it would serve a purpose."

How would random drug testing "distract" him?

If roy loses I won't be surprised if he brings this up. If this is really a concern to him he should have asked for this before the bout agreement was signed, not after. Phone Post

By coming at random times, while he is sparring, sleeping, lifting etc. and taking a blood sample. It can throw his schedule off. Besides, it's VADA, as in voluntary. He can take it if he wants to but doesn't have to, it's his choice. Phone Post

Didn't appear to have a negative effect on Rory MacDonald's performance last Saturday night, but everyone is different. Phone Post

So who was gonna pay the bill of "several thousand dollars"? Mitrione himself?

Agreed.  One less hoop to jump through is always a nice thing.  If everyone has to do it fine, but if not, why put yourself through it if you don't have to?

Hah... They come to the fighter. And it probably takes 30 seconds. What a pitiful excuse. The only reason it would be a distraction, is if you were on something and you were constantly stressed about when they were going to show up.

Which is less distracting than a phone call, or, realizing that you ran out of eggs and have to stop and pick some up.

Bullshit excuses are bullshit.

You guys volunteer for tax audits every year just to show you're honest?

If not why not?  It would show everyone you're not a crook, so go for it.

You're comparing the life consuming pain-in-the-ass ordeal of a tax audit, to giving blood a couple times?

Paying taxes is not the same as training to bash somebody's brains in. Sorry if you can't recognize the obvious difference. Just as 5 minutes every couple weeks is not the same as completely abandoning your normal life and dedicating all of your time to a tax audit.

Stupid comparisons.

Meathead is being shady.

Nothing distracting about showing up to a drug screening and pissing in a cup.

To play devil's advocate over here: Would this give Meathead enough time to clean his system anyway?
