StrictScrutiny - Thanks for all your posts about this event, Burro. Care to share your thoughts about the tournament?

I think the guys over at want vs need did a great job putting this all together. It really did have that professional feel to it. I recommend everyone check out their youtube channel https://www.youtube.com/user/WVSNTV they make amazing jiu jitsu videos with a special focus on lower belts.

As for the matches, they were for the most part very exciting and displayed some very high level jiu jitsu. There was one that lasted well over an hour which you have to be a big jiu jitsu fan to truly appreciate. Jacob sandoval is a BEAST! So is Liera. they're final match is ridiculous cant wait for the video to come out. I would be very surprised if both those guys dont win worlds in 2013.

Also it was announced just before the start that any submission under 5 minutes would automatically win $100 which got EVERYONE pumped, competitors and crowd.

lastly the coaches changed the whole atmosphere and intensity with their presence. Just to give you an idea it was Andre Galvao, Cobrinha, Lucas lepri, Megaton, Baret Yoshida, Romulo Barral

Rayom Ribeiro VS Dominic Damian

This match lasted over an hour but I think they had some camera problems somewhere in the middle

Agreed. Liera is def the world's best purple now that the Miyaos and Keenan are no longer in the division. What is so impressive is that he had the toughest road to the finals of anyone in this tournament and he still won in dominant fashion.

Dont think Liera had the toughest road as everyone was top level so anyone can make that claim. Ramos for instance would have had to go through Liera then edwin then face Sandoval in the final. Anyhow, the semifinal matches are up and they are sick!

What I was trying to say was it appeared that the tournament was not seeded. It looked like the draws were random. Liera had a tougher draw than Sandoval because he had to fight Ed (the 2nd best guy in the tournament) in the semis, whereas Sandoval got Ribeiro, who is not in the same class as Ed. Essentially, what I am saying is the two best guys fought in the semis. Correct me if I'm wrong, but haven't Ed and Sandoval fought before, with Ed winning?

I guess it all worked out in the end because Liera won anyway. But you would think that the two best guys should meet in the final.

Seeding was random - everyone drew a number and that's how the bracket was set up.

1 vs. 2, 3 vs 4, etc.

yeah it was random. But what I mean is that everyone is top level and could win against anyone in any given day. For instance edwin beat sandoval but sandoval has also beaten edwin. You might not know this but Ribeiro fought edwin at the Vegas open and beat him. At the same tournament I lost to Edwin by advantage. I really do believe the two best guys met at the final. Atleast the two best guys that day. watch edwin vs liera then watch Liera vs sandoval.

Interesting points you made. However, the tournaments you are referring to were IBJJF Opens, and therefore a different format. Wouldn't you agree that the format of the Jiu-Jitsu Battle (no time limit/sub-only) makes certain fighters more dangerous than others?

Also, did you train differently or have a different strategy for the Jiu-Jitsu Battle because it was no time limit/sub-only?

There are some guys like Liera that are great no matter what the format of the tournament is. However, I would argue that someone like Ribeiro is more of a point tournament fighter.

I'm interested to hear what you (Burro) or anyone else thinks on these matters. Thanks!

The format definitely took me out of my game. I only had 2 weeks notice to prepare for this and I happened to have the bad luck that my coaches left for Brazil the day I got the news. So I was the main instructor at our academy. I tried changing a few things for instance I organized a tournament with the exact same rules using our blue belts and purple belts. I also did a drill where I got a fresh partner every time I tapped the previous one. The only way for me to get a rest would be to get tapped.

Having said that, I don't think there was much that could have prepared me for the environment and format since it was my first event. I really tried to keep it loose to put on a show. In hindsight I think I would have done better if I had approached it as I would have any other IBJJF tournament.

I tried to get a local black belt buddy but he just happened to be busy. So I had my teammates that came with me. 2 purples and a blue.
