The 38-year-old MMA veteran Megumi Fujii defeated Mei Yamaguchi via unanimous decision today at Vale Tudo Japan 2012 in Tokyo.

Prior to the fight, which marked her 26th career win, Fujii announced she's likely to retire from the sport at year's end.

In her native Japan, Fujii has posted a 19-0 record for organizations such as Shooto, BodogFIGHT, Smackgirl and Jewels. She began her career 22-0 before a questionable decision losses to Zoila Gurgel in a Season 3 tournament two years ago.

Sad to see her leave. I didn't catch her fight with Aguilar, but other than that I still consider her undefeated, she beat Frausto IMO. I wish she stuck around for a couple UFC fights, her vs Rhonda could be an awesome grappling match. Phone Post

God damn it, come to the UFC!

She got screwed in that Bellator decision. I wanted to stab a small orphan.

Megumi Fujii never lost a fight legitimately. Period.

Megumi beat JAG in a very close fight, 30-27.

Megumi clearly beat Zoila 49-46.

Oh, and JAG also clearly beat Zoila 30-27.

Her grappling skills are second to none.

Somehow, judges scored all these fights the other way around, and managed to taint her otherwise intact record and perfect career.

She is the female GOAT.

This. It's sad that she is so overlooked, but she is a true pioneer and legend to WMMA.

Thanks for the memories! Phone Post

she was a powerhouse on top of being an incredible grappler. she pretty much cleaned out the lightweight division for the better part of 5 years. i just wish she would've fought watanabe hisae when she was in her prime.

Sadly, Bellator has a North America-exclusive contract with her, so Invicta or the UFC were never possibilities. I'd love to see her fight another retiring fighter, Rosi Sexton, in a one-off fight in Invicta, maybe at 120 catchweight, but it doesn't look like that's in the cards and Bellator would have to allow it. Fujii is one of those great pioneers that helped pave the way for the women today who are helping it skyrocket in popularity today. She is truly an all-time great. If she was 5 years younger maybe her prime could have extended into the UFC, but alas 'twas not to be.

She never retired.

Actually, we still don't know if she is retiring or not now. She has had many injuries and has been considering this for a while now.

She is still my favourite fighter of all time, regardless of gender. As far as I'm concerned she is still undefeated. Phone Post
