I am repeating this question from another guy who posted it online because it is a great question.

This start of a new year of training:

"“What area of my game, if cultivated maximally for the next few months, would likely bring about the biggest overall increase in my BJJ performance?
Could be a strength, could be a weakness.”

For me it will be attention to breaking grips from both my guard and when passing the guard

what is yours?

Stalk Marcelo Garcia, and post about it.

Additionally:

Try to finally lose 20+ lbs and compete in the NY Open and the Master's/Seniors Championship.

Become a better teacher and grow my academy from 10 students to 30 students (I aim low- it's something I do as a hobby).

Steer away from playing bottom half guard, and concentrate more on implementing Marcelo's butterfly guard, 1 legged x guard, into my game when I face tough opponents/partners.

Kying, I seen you post about playing bottom half guard before, with all your training with Marcelo how did that happen? Lol, just doesn't make sense, just wondering

I already had 5-6 years of bjj training before I started training with Marcelo.

By that time, I had already favored the half guard game (I have thick short legs, that allow me to naturally clamp down tight- so being lazy in nature, I gravitated towards that).

Since training with Marcelo, I always try his butterfly- xguard game, but if I go against a tougher opponent, I lose confidence and fall back on my old game.

Furthermore, my cardio isn't very good, and I don't often "push" myself in training (only rolling 65% intensity or so). At my skill level, if I play Marcelo's game while being lazy and not pushing the pace, I can get readily smashed by more skilled (or athletic) opponents.

I am hoping I am finally healthy enough to stay with BJJ every week, always get better and get into even better shape.

I would like to travel to a couple places and train there, whether it be other Relson gyms, or gyms with guys on here.

Further my BJJ mindset and get away from my traditional sports mindset.

Meet people on here who are better than me that I can run things by.

Most importantly I need to get out of my current job because it has totally affected the other areas of my life, and that includes BJJ. I get done with work and just want to be left alone, not go do something I love.

Compete in 2 naga events and at least 1 ibjjf event and win the master/senior Worlds in my division. I will turn 41 in a week so I'll be competing in senior 2, but still haven't forgiven myself for missing the innaguaral event in 2012.

My goal is to amp up my path to purple. Work heavily on improving my top game -- it's complete shit right now. I also want to try my first competition.

continue to love learning and training

Train 4 to 5x per week rather than my usual 3 to 4x

Compete in at least 10 competitions at 149lbs

Keep my walking weight around 153 as opposed to my usual 157

So much more.... Phone Post

I'm really struggling with what my goals should be this year. Last year was easy, as a newly promoted purple with no open guard game, I focussed most of my training on open guard, and it definitely paid off.

Now I don't know what should be my next focus. My bottom game is still much weaker than my top game, but I don't know that there's one particular position that needs that much work.

One of my goals is definitely to make my game more seamless and to make my transitions tighter, but it's hard to put that into tangibles or even set about a clear path to practice that and then measure outcomes.

As for teaching, I want my class to have a consistent attendance of 10 students, and structure it to focus on 1 position a month or something like that. I also want to instill in my students good drilling habits.

Passing - specifically engaging the open guard.

Get my green belt in judo (yellow now, doesn't seem impossible w/ 2nights/week judo. We have gradings once/semester. I am a BJJ purple belt.)

Lose 30lbs.

Compete. For one reason or another I took last year off. I'd like to compete at Heavyweight, which is 23lbs away right now.
