"You're asking me where he is, I don't know, as far as being cut. We'll talk to the boys and see," UFC President Dana White told media members about Guillard following the UFC 155 post-fight press conference on Dec. 29 in Las Vegas.

Guillard has been with the UFC since his appearance on TUF 2, going 11-8 inside the Octagon dating back to 2005. The Louisiana native has been inconsistent in the cage, but he is best known for his tremendous knockout abilities, which he has showcased on several occasions.

In his most recent defeat to Varner at UFC 155 last month, Guillard did not fight with the same all-out, in-your-face style he usually brings to the cage - which was somewhat of a letdown to White.

"If you ever notice, when Melvin Guillard comes out with that explosive, tries to go after you and knock you out [mentality], he wins more fights than he loses," White said. "When he has that sit back and wait kind of style, he's just not as effective as he is when he lets it all go."

Kind of feel sorry for Melvyn, he kept coming unstuck with the explosive approach so tried to adapt his style. It hasn't really worked so far but I wouldn't cut him.

Generally I enjoy his fights and hope he stays. Phone Post

They would be absolutely foolish to cut a guy like Guillard.

So many other dead-weight, no-name fighters in the LW division that should be cut before Melvin.

Considering what Marcus Davis said about Melvin last week? He can go back to the regionals for all I care anymore. He can cheat all he likes there, there's a reason why Varner said check him for greasing.

I missed that, what did he say about him? Phone Post

I remember Melvin's most spectacular losses being when he came out firing (stephenson, lauzon for example). I question Dana's memory here.

CREamed_by_DongJ - Guillard is entertaining and he has a pretty good reputation for being such...Why would you want to remove him Dana Dane?

Don't be foolish, he's a top LW who can beat top 5 guys on his best nights. You gotta keep guys like Melvin around.

LOL @ being able to beat top 5 lightweights

I admit hes got talent, but he has such little heart that he'll never amount to anything but a fringe top 15 guy at best.

Oprah666 - In another thread we figured out the definition of a can, or pro-opponent was a fighter picked to make another fighter shine.
.
As for journeyman, whats the definition of that?
Journeyman is a guy who has never been champ, has always worked hard, made a living and hung around but was never an elite title contender. I think sometimes journeymen are awarded title shots but again, they were never truly amongst the highest echelon of talent. Phone Post

Warrenpeace - Melvin was foolish to leave Jackson's for blackzillions.

His career is dead ever since he left.

Yep, I think a lot of people this coming......While the Blackzillions are a good team, Jackson was better at getting Melvin to follow a game plan......He seem to mature so much while he was there.......In a nutshell he had more structure at Jackson's (at least that is how it appears) and he needs this more than that average fighter........I don't think he is getting cut though, nor should he.......I think Dana is trying to light a fire under his ass........

I figured if a corner wanted the AC to make sure Guillard wasn't greased it was due to word getting around that he's done it. Thanks RVD Phone Post

Agreed. Unknown names on a card to jack for sales. Guillard should get the exception as a "guy that wars"

This is sad, he definitely doesn't deserve to be cut, hes super exciting and is a tough fight for anyone in the UFC at 155. I don't think his last performance was that bad I just think Varner is badly underrated, he's stoppage of barboza was intense. Both of them belong on any UFC main card, more so then belcher, okami, brunson and leben, and they proved that, they were my fight of the night Phone Post

UFC really needs to start building guys back up after losses.  I don't get why losing to top guys is a bad thing or a means to get cut.  Let's say

Shogun, previous LHW champ his losses were to Jones Hendo and Gustaf, what if he never fought vera, then he'd be losing to 3 top  guys, and how does that justify a means to get cut?  Sure he's not going to get higher but  he's still easy top 10, probably top 5.  not saying Shogun sucks or guillard was champ material, but guillard is a good strong guy with some what of a name that brings it.  He's like a stephan bonnar, chris leben,  josh kos guy, meaning hes not going to be champ but hes a cool dude to have on the roster that will float around and bring exciting fights.

Why do people constantly say shit like this? You do know all fighters are judged differently right?

Hardy is a main draw for the UK market, thats the ONLY reason he is still around, if he was from Florida he would have been cut already.

Certain fighters get more chances based on

Being an exciting fighter
being a draw in a certain market
being a legend
Being a guy who has helped the UFC out in tight spots

Stop comparing fighters because no two fighters are the same.

Its why a guy like Zhang can lose 4 in a row and he wont be cut because he the big fighter they have in China and thats a market they are really trying to crack.
