Hello everyone!

My Academy (Richmond BJJ Academy in Richmond, Virginia) just celebrated our 11th Anniversary! As part of our celebration, we are releasing a 2nd technique of the month video, filmed at one of our group classes.

Starting with a nice closed guard sweep (when your opponent stands up to open and pass your guard), this video shows four different options from the sweep:
1) Achieve the Mount
2) Attack and Armlock
3) Attack a Triangle Choke
4) Attack an Omoplata (Shoulder Lock)
This video has a lot of great details, we hope you enjoy it!

Good training to you all,
Eric Burdo

Eric I really like your techniques man. They so remind me of the solid fundamental stuff I remember learning in the late 90's before all he weird bjj sport stuff of recent years, that by the way could get you severely hurt on a street altercation. The techniques you have been showing are effective street and sport often times surprise these sport bjjers that don't practice the good old bread and butter stuff.

cheesesteak - Eric I really like your techniques man.

Thank you! I have trained for the past 15 years under an old-school Carlson Gracie Black Belt (Julio "Foca" Fernandez) who has taught me well. Back when I started training, we used to do "Vale Tudo" drills every week, in order to make sure we understood the correlation of our gi training and striking/self-defense scenarios. Many schools don't do that anymore, they are very focused on the sport side of Jiu-Jitsu.

Although the sweep above is shown with a gi grip, it can be performed without the sleeve grip by rolling that hand back to the floor (next to your ear) and pushing off the ground. It is classically known as the "handstand" sweep.

The armlock transition from the mount is very fundamental, and regularly used in go, no-gi and MMA scenarios. Minotauro's classic armlock of Cro Cop back in Pride is a fine example.

Good training!
-Eric

good vid. i used to train at new breed in southern california under johnny r. and john ouano and like yourself they were very thorough in explaining the details of each technique taught. i've trained at a few other places and even today i can say that i've never had better teachers. BJJ rev obviously cranks out awesome instructors. keep the videos coming!
