the good news is the numbers stopped tanking... the bad news is they arent anywhere near where they need to be to legitimately threaten zuffa's mma hegemony long term.

800k on the first run means you cant replay in primetime and it also means the shoulder programming will not pull enough to air on primetime (countdown/magazine/clip shows).

to give you an example... UFC unleashed and best of pride used to pull a million plus in that timeslot.  this is just shoulder programming.

If spike cant replay bellators flagship product in primetime or it's shoulder programming (besides the reality show) they cant compete with the UFC and fox in the mma space.  spike cant remain the best platform for mma with only 1 hour of mma programming a week in primetime.

Spike's biggest advantage was having the ufc all these years and their felixibility while the UFC's distribution strategy on fox is in dissaray.  We've seen with just a simple move of UFC's programming on FX their audience is coming back and FX doesnt replay anything.

FS1 is gonna have tons of UFC content and the flexibility to counter program spike.

This is a race between who can close the gap first.  if Zuffa can recreate an mma platform as good or better than what they had on spike before spike can recreate an mma product as good or better than what they had with the UFC then zuffa places the nail on the coffin...  if vice versa then spike can become a real #2 (pepsi to coke)

with 800k they are just surviving... look at the numbers... they keep around 900k of the tna audience at the start and tank all the way down to 670k during the main event.  if they didnt have the TNA lead in they'd be doing around 600k viewers which means they would essentially be dead.

Now what happens if the UFC counter programs?  all they would have to do is shave 200k viewers and spikes project would be dead.

I dont belive the UFC and FS1 will be capable of doing that until next year... but when they do it's game over.

Bellator needed to get and keep over a million viewers on it's first run so spike could replay it over and over in primetime and to give it's shoulder programming a shot.  if spike cant air 4 hours of mma on primetime every week they are done.

right now they air one hour a week in primetime and they are barely treading water using their best lead in (tna).

next up... the reality show.  I suspect it will do around the same or better because it's only one hour meaning the audence from tna will not drop as much.   they've got another chance if the reality show works... but it's gotta do a million viewers or more.

if the reality show can do a million plus they can then move the live events to another night and build the viewership of the live events with the reality show. They can replay the shit out of the reality show and build a decent audience for the live events.

more importantly, spike would have 4 hours of mma programming a week in primetime (1 hour reality show on thursdays 10pm and 3 hours live event on wednesdays or tuesdays from 8 to 11pm).  Now you have a race.

they should have had all of this ready by now.  THey are moving too slow...  they should have used last year to get all of this ready because UFC's distribution strategy on fox is still in somewhat of dissaray.  Even the UFC numbers are coming back up, They will be moving again from fx to fs1... the time was yesterday for spike.

spike only ordered 10 episodes of the reality show. they are only committed to 10 episodes... that's it.

what spike is doing with mma seems more like an angry ex-girlfriend fucking a guy you dont like... once her anger is over they wonder why they are still fucking this guy.

It's important to note that is the male 18-49. It did a .4 in the overall 18-49 and is also a new record for them I believe. Phone Post
