So as someone pointed out we've seen a lot of decisions on the Barao/Mcdonald card already.

I think a viable solution to make more exciting fights would be to make a separate bonus structure for the prelims. It's uncommon that prelim fighters get bonuses. Prelims fighters should be able to win smaller of-the-night bonuses of ~$15k each. It's better than winning nothing and the small amount would help a lot of these guys.

As it stands right now most of the prelims fighters are just starting in the UFC or potentially on their way out. Either way they have a huge incentive to win in the safest way possible since there is very little upside for taking huge risks.

As a result safe styles are imbued in the UFC culture from the outset since nobody wants to get cut from the organization. This carries over to when they are eventually moved to the main card. Incentivize the prelims guys to fight more by granting a separate bonus system from the main card fighters who receive anywhere from $40 - 65k for OTN awards. Better prelims = better TV ratings = more PPV buys.

Do it, Dana!

This is why competing organizations in MMA is a good thing. If the fighters aren't in the UFC, they won't make as much money. If a hockey player gets cut from an NHL team, they can still get picked up by another team In the NHL. But once you get let go from the UFC, you are pretty much screwed out of a decent payday. No thanks. Of the night should be that, of the night; not "well you aren't as good but you did better than these not as good" of the night. It ends up being more money spent, and could possibly not even help. Unless you want the main of the nights getting reduced. Which reduces the incentive for the "good" fights

It also comes off as an insult to the prelim fighters, imo.

This guy gets it. I'm all for higher pay, but adding separate bonuses to Prelims isn't the way to do it. Less competition amongst fighters to put on a great performance.

No. You put on a great fight, knockout, or sub you deserve the bonus regardless if you were the main event or a Facebook fight.

Look at bobby green, got an extra check for his fight but no bonus. It's not like prelim fighters go home with nothing Phone Post

^It's still very common for prelims fighters to be overlooked for OTN bonuses.

For example mediocre submissions on the main card supersede excellent undercard performances. Vinny Magalhaes' amazingly slick armbar was overlooked for Bones Jones' somewhat unspectacular kimura on a wilted Vitor @ UFC 152. The UFC even has an incentive to award the main card fighters because it gives them more superlatives to adorn their fighters with when marketing them.

It would only help the UFC to steer their fighters to take more risks. The $30-45k additionally they'd be spending per event is a drop in the bucket if their fighters perform more spectacularly on TV prelims which creates hype for the card. As it is now guys on prelims are at risk of getting cut or stunting their early career progress. There is NO incentive to fight excitingly. Phone Post

But Watson just won $100,000 and he was on the prelims.

That's how a lot of those fighters make their dough. Plus, how would a separate prelim bonus structure make the main card more exciting? Phone Post

Since when do they give out $100k bonus checks?!

It'd help change the culture for the prelims fighters which will then carry over to their eventual main card performances. Prelims performances are commonly overlooked so guys seek for the safest victory possible because spectacular yet risky finishes are not rewarded as frequently as they should be. Phone Post
