dangerboy12 - I'll spin it.

Women's MMA didn't do 400k buys, Rhonda Rousey did 400k buys.

The criticism of WMMA isn't about the appeal of a single fight or fighter, it's about it's depth and long term appeal.

Women's boxing had mainstream appeal with Laila Ali. She was the beginning, and end of women's boxing with the mainstream. I'm not saying Rousey is the same with MMA, I'm just saying there is a very good chance she is.

I have no problem with the UFC cashing in on her, but they would be foolish to put any eggs in the WMMA basket past Rhonda Rousey.

How many male MMA fighters are draws? Maybe half a dozen out of tens of thousands of active fighters around the world. One legit draw is great for the development of WMMA.

the difference is mens MMA has a large talent pool where there are always fighters there to take over when a star leaves.

Women's MMA, hell, women's sports in general, aren't in the same situation.

I was one of the guys that was concerned it may not do well, not because of WMMA but because Rousey did not have a strong opponent on paper. I was mostly concerned with this being an audition of sorts and not putting your best foot forward. Glad to see it do well though

but in the end, I still think it was smart of UFC to use Rousey's momentum, and use it as long as it lasts.

Once it's gone, if they feel WMMA is still relevant, it's fine if they keep it around. If they don't feel it's relevant, they can drop it like the did when they though the lightweight division wasn't worth having around anymore.

So do you think Ronda had any points on the PPV? The Alvarez contract started at $1 per buy. Even if Rousey got half that, that's a lot of cheddar.

I'm well aware that the whole thing falls apart without Rousey. However, it's still good for WMMA as a whole. There are a dozen other women who are now under contract with the UFC and are going to make several times more than what they'd be making otherwise from increased purses and sponsor payouts as a result.

Good numbers but not surprising IMO. UFC will chase this Rhoda/wmma wave as long as they can make $ with it like everything else.

Ghost of Retard -

If she gets a ppv cut she just earned her first million$ paycheck.

Even if he just gave her 2$ a buy, that's 800k,  and you know she got more than that.

PPV = $50
Split 50/50 with distributors (cable company, directv, etc).

2/25 = %08 of GRs? That's pretty steep.

I think it's $60 actually and PPV $ usually start after a certain number of buys. Also, not all of their distributors are getting anywhere near 50% and 8% of GR isn't high.

Sort of how Bonnar and Griffin got taken care of for being the guys that introduced maintstream America to the UFC, I am sure Dana will take care of both Rousey and Liz for doing the same for WMMA. My guess is that she'll get a house, car, a nice paycheck...and a table.

I hope so, Liz is very easy to like. It's hard to catch her without a smile on her face.

And I'm not hating on WMMA.  I was one of the $400K that bought the event.  But do you disagree that it was a heavily promoted event and do you disagree that many buy the UFC because it's the UFC?  Do you think Ronda would have the same following if she headlined a WSOF event?

First female fight in the UFC and heavily promoted! Good numbers but the UFC put money into it. Phone Post

It's incredible that a women's headlock contest drew twice as much interest as Bendo vs. Edgar. This planet is the worst.

I'm glad the numbers are good, and hope it's indicative of the interest in Rousey and women in the UFC, in general.

But... isn't it possible that this event would have sold half those numbers without someone like Hendo, coming off a fight of the year followed by a long layout during which time he was marketed to fight for the belt, fighting a Forbes belt holder in Machida?

If the co-main would have been Bader v Gustafson, for example, is it possible this event would have sole 250k instead?

...just throwing that out there for some feedback. Phone Post

Agreed.  Pretty much everything that comes out of her mouth annoys the fuck out of me, but she's an absolute stud when it comes to her PPV drawing power.

Pretty confident that @UFC 157 is going to exceed 400k PPV buys, by my indicators. Could go well past.

Surely wasn't because Hendo vs Machida!...

Considering Jones doesn't wanna fight Machida because he doesn't draw, very doubtable Phone Post

I'm glad it did well, but the UFC spent so much money promoting this fight it had to. They haven't tried that hard for one fight in a long time. They can't expect to be able to do that and get that much media attention each time, but it's definitely getting the name out there in a big way. Phone Post
