in the standup? As is, do you think Struve being so tall gives him a false sense of security to brawl with stronger strikers who he towers over? Not bashing Struve BTW, he seems like a cool guy and has tons of heart, but just wondering if this psychological element might play a role in his getting KOed so much.

I was flabbergasted when Struve continued to cover up and wait for Mark to get in range and unleash.

Like anyone growing up with an advantage, they use it as such until someone shows them they're not invincible and you need to develop all your skills.

Yes his height plays a part and so does his reach. He feels that he is far away from the punches which he is and it might make him too relaxes. But he always messes up and lets them get too close to him, gets hit with big shots. He needs to go to a new gym. His striking is seriously lacking .

Something about his approach is very broken. Maybe this is it. Phone Post

I agree that the problem is in his training rather than his attitude.

He needs striking training that addresses his physical attributes. Right now he doesn't fight as " long" as he could.

There are distinct advantages to being the taller fighter.

He needs training that keeps him in better control of range and conscious of what techniques apply in those ranges. The tall man has advantages in close range as well(top of the clinch, different angles because of long arms, close knees). Struve needs a more disciplined game.

The third round with Hunt was some of the worst defensive striking I've ever seen. Letting the much smaller, much more powerful striker in on the inside like that, he's either a terrible listener or his trainers can't get a point across Phone Post

The problem may be the erroneous asumption that "fighting tall" means standing up straight. It doesn't at all. Anderson Silva is a great example of fighting tall, unfortunately not one that Struve has the physical attributes to emulate. He simply doesn't have the speed or coordination to fight like Silva.

But he could learn a lot about angles and exploiting long range from the fighters that do it. dhas, I agree he's not twitchy quick, but he has enough speed to get it done, I feel like his economy of motion is more the issue.

With his reach he should be able to avoid ever getting hit with his height advantage. He should also be able to kick everyone and keep them at range. It would make for more boring fights, but if he used his size to his advantage, he'd find himself on the fast track to the title.

A lot of times really huge people are lacking when it comes to developing skills because they are used to being able to get by on their size.

He should go to Jackson's, it'd be nice to see him use his reach like Bones does. Phone Post

There is another rather tall guy in Holland he might want to hook up with, won a few Pancrase, K1, Pride and UFC fights.

I wonder why he wasn't already training with Semmy. Semmy himself made big improvements in the last few years. Whoever trains him could help Struve regardless of his size but being able to mirror Semmy seems like a no brainer
